The Center for Community and Global Health also supports medical language electives that may be taken in M1 or M2 year.

The Medical Spanish and Medical Polish Student Electives provides one week of elective course credit to students who meet all requirements, which include:

1. 20 hours of peer-led language classes;
2. Participation in lectures/seminars dealing with cross-cultural healthcare or healthcare disparities;
3. Shadowing a translator or Spanish- or Polish-speaking physician at the LUMC.

For Medical Spanish, students' existing language skills will determine their section placement:

1. Beginner:learning focuses on words, phrases, and commands essential to a physical exam and useful in building a relationship with the patient; new beginners receive training on how to work with a translator in a clinical setting,
2. Intermediate:learning focuses on mastering the medical interview in Spanish; more advanced beginners receive training on how to work with a translator in a clinical setting,
3. Advanced:learning focuses on developing fluency and vocabulary through a conversation format; more advanced students receive training on how to translate in a clinical setting.

The Medical Polish Student Elective involves learning the basics of the Polish language, with initial lessons focusing on the Polish alphabet and phonetics, before subsequently advancing to grammar, syntax, and vocabulary necessary to communicate effectively in Polish in medical settings.

All subject matter will be aligned with material being taught in Patient Centered Medicine-1 (PCM-1).
