Licensure and Degree Verification

As a resource for current students as well as alumni, the Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work provides information regarding licensure applications and common requests.

Verification Letters

If a degree verification letter is needed, email your academic advisor. When requesting a letter, include the following information: the addressee’s name and contact information, how the letter should be provided (email, fax, mail), and details of what the letter should entail.

Transcripts

Many states require official transcripts. Official transcripts may be requested in LOCUS or through the Office of Registration and Records

Syllabi

Many states require sample syllabi and course descriptions, which can be found here.  If a specific syllabus is not listed, please contact Assistant Dean Amy Greenberg (agreenberg2@luc.edu) via email and include the name and course number needed. 

Illinois Licensed Social Work (LSW)

Illinois Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

MSW graduate students must work for 3,000 hours under the supervision of an LCSW to be eligible to apply for the LCSW examination with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Once your application is approved by the IDFPR, you will receive a candidate handbook, a letter of approval, and a test code. Contact the ASWB Candidate Registration Center at 888.579.3926 to schedule your examination.

Please note there are two additional fees as a part of the licensure process. The acceptance of the examination fee is $50, and the endorsement of the license fee following passing the examination is $200. 

Loyola 's School of Social Work offers an examination preparation course annually; please email SSW-licensure@luc.edu for more information. In addition, NASW-IL also offers examination preparation courses. Learn more about these courses. Additionally, the Association of Social Work Boards offers study guides and practice tests.

Exam Prep Information

Most states use the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) as their testing resource, and the ASWB offers study guides and practice tests. For hands-on practice, order the ASWB online practice test.

Non-Illinois License  

To apply for a professional social worker license outside of Illinois, visit the National Association of Social Workers website and select the state from which you wish to get your license. .Please locate the forms that Loyola will have to complete on your behalf if applicable, and submit them to the Student Affairs Office via email (SSW-licensure@luc.edu).

Schools Specialization PEL (Type 73)

Students interested in earning their Professional Educator License (PEL) School Social Worker Endorsement do so through the Illinois State Board of Education. Loyola’s School of Social Work outlines that process here:
