Master of Arts in Urban Affairs (MA)
Program Overview
Economic growth. Globalization and immigration. The impact of the housing market on neighborhood stability. These issues have a considerable impact on how contemporary cities work and require thoughtful attention.
A professional degree focused on training students to assume technical or leadership roles in government, nonprofit organizations, or business, the Master of Arts (MA) in Urban Affairs at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) is an interdisciplinary degree program focusing on how cities function for their residents. Even more, the degree equips students with the skills and knowledge to address some of the pressing challenges found in urban environments.
The MA in Urban Affairs curriculum brings together viewpoints and analytical tools from multiple fields to offer diverse perspectives on the causes of urban problems and their possible solutions. It includes core courses on the political environments and sociology of cities as well as analytical tools alongside electives covering topics such as community development, criminal justice, education, immigration, nonprofit management, and public health. In addition, all students attend a series of lectures given by practitioners in the field (MPP 502) and complete an internship or participate in a group policy practicum project (MPP 501) to gain work-related experience.
Our flexible and accelerated 8-week online courses allow you to complete your degree quickly–typically in 18-24 months–from an accredited, leading university with engaged faculty and a 100-year track record of educating adult learners in an urban environment.
