Join DFPA Artist-in-Residence Aram Han Sifuentes for "Talking Back to Power Through Art and Activism" as part of the Center for Urban Research and Learning's CURL Friday Morning Seminar series.
Aram Han Sifuentes uses art to disrupt, unsettle, and rupture dominate narrative to assert, demand, and claim spaces for those who are commonly othered, particularly for immigrants of color. She will talk about her projects U.S. Citizenship Test Sampler, Protest Banner Lending Library, and Official Unofficial Voting Station: Voting for All Who Legally Can’t and how she uses art to confront social and racial injustices against the disenfranchised and riff off of official institutions and bureaucratic processes to reimagine new, inclusive, and humanized systems of civic engagement and belonging.

The way we operate in physical space is a manifestation of the political climate. Get it Together aims to pose questions of ownership and power in the built environment. Nia Easley and Tulika Ladsariya each create work that calls attention to the ways our surroundings are influenced by various ideologies. Through these works, the artists challenge expectations and reveal biases in an effort to put the pieces back together.

Artist Talk

Jordan Martins is a Chicago based visual artist, curator, and educator. He received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador, Brazil in 2007, and is a lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and North Park University. He is the executive director of Comfort Station, a multi-disciplinary art space in Chicago. Martins’s visual work is based in collage processes, including painting, photography, video and installation, and he has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Goldfinch, The Mission, Evanston Art Center, LVL3, The Franklin, The Museu de Arte da Bahia, Zeitgeist, and Experimental Sound Studio. He was a resident in the Chicago Artists Coalition’s HATCH program in 2013.

Edra Soto (b. Puerto Rico), curator of Under the Influence currently in view at the Ralph Arnold Gallery, is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist, educator, curator, and co-director of the outdoor project space THE FRANKLIN. She is invested in creating and providing visual and educational models propelled by empathy and generosity. Her recent projects are motivated by civic and social actions focus on fostering relationships with a wide range of communities.
