Healthcare Policy and Regulation

Healthcare is arguably one of the most heavily regulated sectors of our society. It is with good reason that governments at all levels are very interested in the provision of excellent healthcare. This session reviews the major regulatory bodies and their impact on our healthcare system. It highlights the impact of governmental policies and how they are implemented through the regulations enforced by agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Internal Revenue Service, the Food and Drug Administration, the Joint Commission, state agencies, and others. An overview of these important regulations, which were enacted to address safety and quality, access, financing, ethics, and privacy, is presented. Key developments in Healthcare Reform and the shift toward Accountable Care Organizations will also be discussed.
