Newsletter 2.3 - September 26, 2023

Here are the latest announcements of events and opportunities!!! Anyone interested in research in the School of Environmental Sustainability using physics to stop invasive fish in Lake Michigan, please read below and contact Rachel Rogers.

Department News and Events

  • Seniors! Are you considering graduate school? We would like to start gathering information regarding senior students who are planning to apply this year to graduate programs. Our aim is to guide and advise those students through the application process. If you are considering applying to graduate school (e.g. PhD, MSc), please fill out the following short survey ASAP. https://forms.gle/VQPYrtFN4is1AJDB8
  • Visit from Columbia University Engineering on Friday, October 20th at 12 PM in Cudahy 302. Students at any level interested in learning about Engineering at Columbia are welcome to attend and network.
  • Visit from Washington University St. Louis Engineering on Thursday, November 16th at 2:30 in Cudahy 301. Students at any level interested in learning about Engineering at WUSL are welcome to attend and network.

Lab Opening for Physics Students

  • Research Opportunity for Physics/Biophysics majors in the Loyola School of Environmental Sustainability. Reuben Keller and Rachel Rogers are conducting experiments on the development of aquatic electric barriers to prevent invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. Several Physics majors have been involved in this project and they have an opening for a physics student to join their group. Please contact Rachel Rogers (regly@luc.edu) or Reuben Keller (rkeller1@luc.edu) if you are interested.

University Events

  • The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is seeking applications for its annual Building Bridges Awards. Multiple Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded for each category: Building Community Bridges, Building Interdisciplinary Bridges, and Building International Bridges. The deadline to apply for these awards is Friday, September 29, 2023

Other Opportunities

  • Physics Today is hosting a webinar on Exploring the Solar Eclipse on Tuesday, September 26th at 7:00 PM ET. You can register for free here.
  • American Physical Society (APS) is hosting the Physics Undergraduates Learning and Sharing Experiences (PULSE) webinar series, designed to prepare undergraduate students for pursuing or participating in academic research. The next webinar is Wednesday, September 27th at 10:00 AM ET on Potential Research Areas for Undergraduate Research. You can register here.
  •  The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business is again hosting Women in Analytics and Leadership Conference on Friday, October 13. The event includes speakers and panels from some of the industry’s leading employers. Sessions focus on helping students from all majors understand how they can get started with a career in analytics and to find out what it’s really like to work as a woman in data analytics. Come join us and see how students from STEM and non-STEM backgrounds can enter the field. There is no cost for the event, including lunch, you can register here: https://tippie.uiowa.edu/walc
  • The Society of Physics Students Zone 9 meeting is being held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Association of Physics Teachers meeting on November 3-4 at Marquette University in Milwaukee.  In addition to talks and workshops, there will be a poster session open to both student and faculty attendees.  There will also be local lab tours and a round table for the SPS students to talk to physics major alumni who have followed different career tracks after graduation.  The attached file is the current flyer for the event, including registration information, campus maps, and a preliminary schedule.
  • Loyola Physics students attended last year’s APS Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at Argonne Lab. The Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, MO, will host CUWiP on January 19-21, 2024. CUWiP will bring together successful physicists who identify as women or gender minorities and over 2,000 undergraduate women in physics to highlight career opportunities and women’s contributions in physics. CUWiP sites will provide support for the lodging and meals of students who will attend the conference. To apply, visit http://www.aps.org/cuwip/. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. EDT on Monday, October 23rd, 2023.
  • Interested in Teaching Physics at the high school level? Southern Teachers has 750 member schools around the South that list physics teaching jobs. They provide individualized service to each candidate, helping them find jobs that suit their interests, talents, and geographic preferences. Each candidate has a dedicated placement counselor to help them with their search. This is a free service for candidates! Use this link to apply. If you are graduating in May, it's not too early to start your job search.

Graduate School Information

  • The University of Pennsylvania offers a Master of Science in Medical Physics degree and PhD in Bioengineering - Medical Physics Concentration.  We prepare future leaders for careers in medical physics specialties such as radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine, and health physics.  Our multidisciplinary programs integrate knowledge across the university by giving students a strong foundation in basic, translational, and clinical research while preparing them for world-class cancer care.  Our programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP). We will host a Virtual Information Session on Wednesday, October 11th from 5:15 – 6:30 pm ET featuring an overview of the U. Penn Medical Physics Graduate Programs and an alumni & student panel.
  • Graduating seniors interested in graduate studies (MS or PhD) in physics, biophysics or quantum information at Wake Forest University Department of Physics. They have a new emphasis in quantum information sciences (QIS) via quantum materials, quantum computing, and quantum optics. Their PhD stipend has increased to $29,000 along with health insurance and a 100% waiver of tuition and mandatory fees. MS students receive a 74% tuition waiver. Applications for Fall 2024 opened August 1 with a Jan 8th deadline; more details can be found here.
