Earth-shaking Science News

For nine straight days in 2023, seismographs around the world measured a steady vibration from an unknown origin. The signal was a stark contrast to the large peaks associated with earthquakes. Scientists from Denmark just announced that the cause of the vibration was a massive landslide due to melting glaciers in Greenland that dumped a volume equal to 10,000 Olympic swimming pools into a fjord. The landslide generated a 650-ft high tsunami that slammed into the other side of the 1.5-mile-wide fjord. The waves continually reflected off the fjord walls for over nine days.
