Loyola Physics Newsletter

Hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather. Please read through this newsletter to learn about important and fun upcoming events this month. In particular, registration for the upcoming Conference for Undergraduate Women and Gender Minorities in Physics (CU*iP) at Fermi Lab has opened. We have had students present their work at this conference, so please check it out under External Opportunities. Representatives from Columbia University and Washington University St Louis are visiting the Department later this month to talk with our students about the dual degree programs in engineering. Please watch your email for notes from your faculty advisors about scheduling meeting to discuss your plans for spring registration. Earth has a new mini moon – but it is only temporary – read about it at the end of the newsletter!!!

Department Events

  • Today’s Physics Seminar speaker is Mary Wojciechowski (Loyola Physics ’84) from BP to talk about “From Physics to Environmental Impact” on October 17th at 2:30 PM in 200 Cudahy
  • Representatives from Columbia University and Washington University St Louis will be visiting the Department to meet with students to talk about their dual degree programs. Please mark your calendars to learn more about earning a BS or MS in Engineering in addition to your Physics degree. All students in any Loyola Physics program are eligible for this opportunity. This is a great opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and network.
    • Columbia Engineering will be visiting the Department on Thursday, October 23 at 3:00 PM.
    • Washington University St Louis will be visiting the Department on Thursday, October 31st at 2:30 PM.
  • Physics Club will be hosting Halloween Bash on October 25th at 4:30 – 6:30 PM on Cudahy Third Floor.
  • Women in Physics will be hosting Karaoke Night on November 8th at 5 – 7:00 PM in 200 Cudahy.

Campus Events

  • Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium with Dr. Sven Leyffer from Argonne National Laboratory will give a talk on “Topological Design Problems” on October 17th at 4:30 PM in 311 Cuneo
  • The Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium (URES) will be held April 5, 2025. Students can begin registering their projects now through March 2, 2025.

External Opportunities

Graduate School

  • Johns Hopkins University will be hosting a live webinar for their Medical Physics Graduate Programs on Monday, October 21st. Medical Physics is a field that applies the principles and methods of physics to the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, particularly in the area of radiology and radiation therapy. Further details are available online at hopkinsmedicine.org/som/education-programs/graduate-programs/johns-hopkins-medical-physics-program and you or any students are welcome to reach out directly with questions to MedPhysMS@jhmi.edu (M.S.) or MedPhysPHD@jhmi.edu (Ph.D.).
  • Wake Forest University offers MS and PhD degrees in Physics. Applications for Fall 2025 are open with a deadline of January 8, 2025. We no longer require GRE scores. Our department consists of 15 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and about 35 graduate students. PhD students receive a tuition & fees scholarship and stipend ($29725 for 2024-25, and expected to increase for 2025-26) as either RAs or TAs and MS students receive a 75% tuition waiver.
  • The University of Notre Dame Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department is inviting Loyola Physics students to apply to their PhD program in Chemical Engineering (https://cbe.nd.edu/graduate/). . We have several online information sessions this fall. Questions about the application process can be sent to cbe@nd.edu, and questions about the PhD program itself can be directed to our director of graduate studies, Prof. William Phillip, wphillip@nd.edu. They offer a stiped of $40k/year.
