The days of a sole scientist toiling in his lab are long gone. Rapidly evolving technology makes it easier than ever for researchers to connect with others working in the same area of study and to access the findings and resources of other institutions.
The National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences is supporting networks of research institutes with Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA). The CTSA supports networks that collaborate on the translational research process to expedite results from bench to bedside.
In 2018, Loyola University Chicago joined the Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM), the Chicago CTSA hub made up of six local institutions. The ITM has connected more than 1,800 researchers and Chicago-area organizations, funded and trained scientists, and sought to make clinical trials more accessible to local patients. Loyola's participation in the ITM is currently led by Elaine Morrato, DrPH, MPH, CPH, founding dean of the Parkinson School for Health Sciences and Public Health.
Other participating medical research centers in Chicago include Rush University Medical Center, NorthShore University Health System, Advocate Health Care, and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
