Online Course Definitions

Distance learning courses are defined by how much material is delivered completely online. Online courses are fully online with no in-person components but may require some real-time (synchronous), virtual class sessions. Hybrid and blended courses utilize a combination of both in-person and online class sessions. HyFlex courses have a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in-person, participating online, or doing both.

Loyola University Chicago uses the following categories and definitions for online, hybrid, blended, and HyFlex courses.

Online Courses

An online course at Loyola University Chicago is one that requires no in-person meetings on campus; all course activities will be conducted via the internet. However, there may be specific times throughout the course when students are required to participate in real-time (synchronous), virtual class sessions.

 

Hybrid Courses

A hybrid course at Loyola University Chicago is one where are at least 75% of the course is delivered online. In addition, there may be specific times when students are required to participate in real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.

 

Blended Courses

A blended course at Loyola University Chicago is one where between 30% and 75% of the course is delivered online. In addition, there may be specific times when students are required to participate in real-time, virtual (synchronous) sessions.

 

HyFlex Courses

HyFlex is a course design model that presents the components of hybrid learning in a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in-person, participating online, or doing both. Students can change their mode of attendance weekly or by topic, according to need or preference.
