The Rogers Park Community Response Team is an action-oriented group created by 49th Ward Alerderwoman Maria Hadden in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. They work with community leaders like the Loyola Community Nursing Center.

Neil Klingensmith, an assistant professor in Loyola's Department of Computer Science contributed to efforts to supply PPE for frontline medical workers. Hewas able to produce thousands of face masks, 2,000 were sent to Loyola hospital, 50 to campus safety, and 50 to Erie Family Health Centers.

Loyola's School of Nursing provides resources to local high schoolers through the Loyola School-Based Health Center (SBHC) at Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. They were able to continue providing vital services to students by moving resources online, and even hosting a Virtual Health Fair.

The Health Justice Project is a Medical-legal partnership clinic, serving over 40,000 low-income patients annually. The clinic continues to serve clients remotely, focusing on access to resources and has even made a resource page on the MLP (Medical-Legal Partnership) Illinois Page.

|
The GEAR UP SAT Prep Program typically provides a weekly SAT Prep course for students of local Chicago high schools. Since in-person classes could no longer be held, the team went hard to work to disseminate study materials to students electronically.

Our school based staff supports schools with translation services, grant-writing, program planning, and budgeting. When the schools closed, our resource coordinators supported students by connecting with families to distribute CPS-owned laptops and Chromebooks for remote instruction.

Loyola's Community and Family Services mental health agency serves the mental health needs of children and families of the Rogers Park and Edgewater communities. They've been able to continue those services remotely through phone calls and virtual zoom appointments and have gone further, gathering COVID resources for clients who are recent immigrants and/or undocumented.

Our Senn High School program offers hands on training for digital journalism. Our program has been able to continue initiatives with student voice work, work on grant proposals to support and extend their work, and develop Senn's journalism program toward becoming an IB Career Programme.

School of Communication students have been volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. One student, Jillian Musielakj, the technology coordinator for the OWL Lab in the School of Communication, contributed to packing nearly 5,000 emergency food boxes containing over 140,000 meals.

The Loyola Community Nursing Center provides local health and nutrition services. The center's dietetic interns created a special immune-system boosting menu, shopping list and recipes and worked with local grocers and the nursing center to create and distribute food bundles.

The PP4H VeggieRx program is a community-based coalition working to provide and promote healthy foods for the Maywood community. During the pandemic, they raised funds and launched an expanded pick-up distribution to meet the emergency food needs of Maywood residents.

Grocery shopping for Senior neighbors
|
Off-campus Loyola students living in nearby apartment buildings reached out to neighbors offering assistance with grocery shopping. One neighbor, Richard McGlynn, reached out to Loyola after students left a heartfelt note under his door offering assistance if needed.
