Addressing Community Safety

Marking its 21st year as a sworn police department, Campus Safety has embarked on a mission to create a safer and more secure environment for the Loyola community. The department offers a bonus supply of officers and patrol vehicles with both the 20th and 24th District Police forces and an outpost on Granville Avenue. Loyola’s commitment to community safety has never been stronger.
Training Beyond Expectations
At the heart of Campus Safety’s success is its robust in-service training program. Loyola’s sworn police officers are not just meeting the legal requirements; they are exceeding them. The University provides extensive training that embraces best practices and adapts to the unique needs of our vibrant community. Loyola’s department takes pride in offering both a wide-ranging and in-depth training program, ensuring our officers are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to respond effectively to any situation.
The Training Coordinator leads this essential initiative, working with the Department’s Training Committee to design and implement comprehensive training strategies. This division emphasizes not only technical skills but also community engagement, ensuring officers are well-prepared to connect with and serve the individuals who make up our community.
Transparency and Accessibility
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency, we invite the Loyola community to discover more about the training our officers receive through our dedicated web page. By engaging our community and sharing our training initiatives, we aim to foster trust and open communication between Campus Safety and the individuals we serve. All training programs are meticulously approved by the State of Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) and coordinated through the Northeast Metropolitan-Regional Training (NEMRT), one of fourteen Mobile Teams of the Illinois ASSIST Programs. Our partnerships with other reputable training agencies, such as NIPSTA, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, and the Illinois State Police, further enhance our training repertoire, ensuring our officers are learning from the best in the field.
A Global Network of Learning
Campus Safety’s dedication to excellence in training does not stop locally. We maintain active relationships with national and international training sources, drawing insights and strategies from across the globe. Our training affiliations include prestigious organizations like the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), and more. These collaborations provide our officers with a comprehensive understanding of modern law enforcement practices, community safety, and ethical standards.
Continuous Improvement
The training landscape is dynamic, and so is our commitment to consistent improvement. Our training resources are regularly updated, ensuring that officers are learning the latest techniques and strategies. Every training pursuit is documented, and we encourage community members to stay informed about the programs our officers are engaged in.
The commitment to continuous growth is embodied by Chief Thomas Murray who demonstrates a department-wide pledge to keep the Loyola community safe. “I am proud of the performance of the people of Campus Safety in protecting our campuses and the communities that surround them. We appreciate the support and input of the community and enjoy a great working relationship with the Chicago Police Department,” said Murray. Together, with the support of the community, Campus Safety is dedicated to fostering a secure, welcoming atmosphere where everyone can thrive.
