St. Ignatius History

An Early Portrait of Ignatius Loyola

This portrait is considered an "authentic portrait." It was most probably painted between 1598 and 1600. It hung in the private chapel of the General of the Society until the time of Fr. Claude Aquaviva (the 4th General Superior of the Jesuits.) It currently hangs in the Provincial Residence in Brussels, Belgium. A reproduction of this portrait was given to the Jesuits of Arrupe House at Loyola University by Fr. Jacques Berleur, S.J., who was a visiting professor at Loyola during the academic year 1994-1995.
