John Shea
John Shea
The Loyola University Chicago mourns the death of John Shea, PhD, professor emeritus of English, who passed away on August 13, 2019.
A treasured Loyola faculty member, John demonstrated an unstinting commitment to others and to his passion, which was the pursuit of excellence in writing. He joined the University faculty 50 years ago and pursued a 30-year career of successful teaching, scholarship, and leadership. He chaired the Department of English, where he led with a steady hand and open arms, from 1977 to 1983. He later served in the Office of the Dean, where he became the director of Writing Across the Curriculum. His sonorous voice—honed in a multitude of Gilbert and Sullivan performances with the Savoyaires—was put to good use in a nearly decade-long stint as Master of Ceremonies at College of Arts and Sciences graduations. He retired from the University in 1998. In the words of his dear friend and colleague, Frank Fennell, PhD, professor and dean emeritus of the College of Arts and Sciences, “John was a genial and talented man who loved his students and who will be deeply missed.”
