Putting students in
the spotlight
L
oyola honored the academic, civic, and
extracurricular achievements of its students at
the Fifth Annual Weekend of Excellence, April 16–19.
The weekend’s events—which included research
symposia, awards ceremonies, and a student
musical—featured more than 1,000 students.

Celebrating generosity
L
oyola celebrated its annual Wolf and Kettle Day
on March 19. This symbolic date represents the
point in the academic year when tuition runs out
and support from generous donors begins. Tuition
at Loyola covers only 70 percent of what it costs to
educate one student for an entire year; the other
30 percent is made possible through the support
of donors. The day was created to not only educate
students about the Ignatian legend of the Wolf and
Kettle but also celebrate the generosity of Loyola’s
alumni and friends.

Introducing
Arrupe College
A
rrupe College of Loyola University Chicago, a two-year associate’s degree program for motivated
students with limited financial resources and an interest in attending a four-year institution after
graduation, is set to launch pending final approval by the Higher Learning Commission of the North
Central Association.
Students graduating from the new college can expect little to no debt and will be qualified to
transfer to a public or private college or university upon completion of the program.
Arrupe College addresses a serious problem in higher education across the country—the need to
increase access to, and completion rates of, post-secondary education degrees for students from low-
income families.
“It’s important for all of us in education to address the issues of accessibility and affordability,”
says Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., Loyola president and secretary of higher education for the Society of
Jesus. “We strongly believe that we can offer an excellent education to talented young people through
Arrupe College. We know that motivated students will succeed if given the resources and environment
needed to achieve their educational goals. This college is core to Loyola’s mission of providing such
access and our commitment to building a more just world.” To learn more, visit
