Dear Graduates and Friends,
L
oyola University Chicago School of Law has
long been recognized for the excellence of
our advocacy program, and mock trial, moot
court, and alternative dispute resolution
competitions are central to our advocacy education. This
issue of
Loyola Law
highlights law student competitions
at Loyola—one of many extracurricular opportunities for
our students to gain high-level practical training. Under
the leadership of Zelda Harris, director of the Dan K. Webb
Center for Advocacy, and with coaching and mentoring
by the numerous alumni and supporters who dedicate
their time and expertise to our students, Loyola’s student
teams continue to develop outstanding skills in advocacy
and take top honors at many important national and
international competitions. A special milestone: Loyola’s
outstanding Corboy Fellowship Program in Trial Advocacy
is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Professor Thomas Haney has contributed an
interesting historical account of the School of Law’s
first African American alumni, highlighting several of
our prominent graduates and faculty who have played
important roles in the civil rights movement.
Read about Loyola’s Education Law and Policy
Institute, which has grown in popularity with both
students and community educators for its exceptional
programming and curriculum. The institute offers a
distinct perspective on how we can serve children’s
educational needs through the law. You will also read
about third-year law student and ChildLaw Fellow
Margaret Condit, who is shifting her career focus from
teaching to education law.
Professor Anne-Marie Rhodes shares the unique
opportunities and challenges in teaching art law,
and Kelley Bender (JD ’05) offers a personal reflection
on how the legal profession could benefit from a more
flexible workplace.
Catch up on what your former classmates are doing
in Hearsay, and please check out the upcoming events
calendar. We always look forward to seeing you on
campus and at alumni gatherings.
