King of the kitchen
S
cott Commings, the executive chef at Loyola’s Retreat and Ecology
Campus, this summer was declared the winner of Fox TV’s
Hell’s Kitchen
,
the high-pressure cooking show hosted by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. His
prize is a $250,000-a-year job offer as head chef at Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill in
Las Vegas. Commings, who beat out 19 other contestants to win the show, had
a simple goal when he started at Loyola in 2010: create a dining experience that
people would love—and do it with seasonal, locally grown food. It was a goal
that meshed perfectly with Loyola’s commitment to sustainability.

The bells of
Madonna
della Strada
L
oyola recently had four bells cast and installed in the Madonna della Strada
Chapel, thus completing the vision of James Mertz, S.J., who raised the
funds to build the chapel. Each of the bells will be inscribed with a dedication to
an individual or group that is an important part of the chapel’s history.
The bells were rung for the first time on November 16 to commemorate the
25th anniversary of the martyrdom of six Jesuit priests and two others murdered
by the Salvadoran military.
