Beyond the School of Law’s recent accomplishments, there’s lots more happening at
Loyola University Chicago. Following is a snapshot of the latest Loyola news.
Top workplace
three-peat
For three years, the
Chicago
Tribune
has published a list
of Chicago’s Top 100 Workplaces,
and for the third consecutive
year, Loyola has been recognized
in the large-company category.
This year, the University is
ranked 21st.

Loyola University Chicago Phonathon students celebrate their first million-dollar year.
Honoring the
‘game of change’
In 1963 (the year Loyola became the
only Illinois school ever to win the
NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball
Championship), Loyola was to play
Mississippi State University (MSU)
in the regional semifinals. However,
the all-white MSU squad was
frequently denied participation in
the postseason due to an unwritten
Mississippi law that prohibited
competition against integrated teams.
Loyola Head Coach George Ireland
was starting four African-American
Ramblers. Despite the prospect of
losing their jobs, MSU’s head coach
and president challenged the system
and allowed the team to face Loyola
at Jenison Field House, in a game won
by the Ramblers, 61-51. The game
changed college basketball and was
a milestone for civil rights. It was
recently named the No. 12 moment
in NCAA Tournament history by
ESPN.com.
This past December, Loyola
and MSU faced one another at
Gentile Arena for the first time since
that historic game 50 years ago.
Several members of the 1963 Loyola
and MSU teams gathered in Chicago
for the event. Loyola’s entire ’63
basketball team is being inducted
into the National Collegiate Basketball
Hall of Fame, the only team to achieve
that honor.
