Call for Research Proposals: Rule of Law Institute

The Rule of Law Institute (ROLI) at Loyola University Chicago invites proposals for its fourth annual research funding opportunity. This initiative supports research that critically examines the rule of law, its foundations, and its implications across legal, political, and social contexts. Proposals may explore empirical questions on the determinants of the rule of law, such as institutional design, political stability, economic development, or social trust, as well as its consequences for democratic governance, human rights, access to justice, and economic growth.

ROLI also welcomes theoretical and philosophical inquiries into the meaning and function of the rule of law in contemporary societies. This includes research on its relationship to legitimacy, state sovereignty, authoritarian resilience, legal pluralism, and global governance. The institute encourages interdisciplinary perspectives that integrate law, political science, sociology, history, economics, and other relevant fields to deepen the understanding of how the rule of law operates across different settings.

Full-time regular faculty and graduate students at Loyola University Chicago are eligible to apply. Up to four research grants of $6,000 will be awarded to faculty for Summer/Fall 2025, and up to three grants of $3,000 will be available to graduate and doctoral students. Award recipients will be designated Rule of Law Institute Research Fellows for the 2025-2026 academic year. Fellows are expected to present their research at the ROLI Annual Symposium in Spring 2026, participate in ROLI events throughout the academic year, and contribute their work to ROLI’s public archives.

Proposals are due by June 15, 2025, and should be between 500 and 800 words. A proposal should clearly define the research question, objectives, and significance within the study of the rule of law. It should outline the methodology, expected contributions, and a timeline for completion. Submissions and inquiries should be sent to jsorensen2@luc.edu. Applicants will be notified of the decision by June 30th.
