Elizabeth Powers
Ms. Powers’ legal career spans from in-house patent attorney for a major pharmaceutical company (Bayer AG), to transactional counsel for a range of start-up technology companies, to academia. She specializes in intellectual property analysis and counseling, combined with licensing and strategic planning for technology companies.
A registered patent attorney, she drafts and prosecutes patents in the fields of medical devices, clean technologies, bio-technology, biomedicals, information technologies, mechanical devices, and software technologies. Her practice includes working with start-up technology companies, including in the internet space, to develop intellectual property strategies, trademark selection and protection, licensing strategies, and commercial contracts. She works closely with corporate counsel on due diligence, acquisition assessment, and complex technology-based transactions. Her counseling combines extensive knowledge of intellectual property law with a practical business approach.
Ms. Powers lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on intellectual property law matters. She brings her international experience to her counseling practice, working with clients to devise international intellectual property protection strategies. She co-authored the textbook "IP Strategy", originally published in 1996 and currently in its 13th edition (2008), directed to mining and protecting intellectual property assets of technology companies. Ms. Powers is the Editor of New Matter, the official publication of the IP Section of the California State Bar. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Law Section of the California State Bar. She is licensed to practice law in the State of California and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She received all of her degrees from Santa Clara University.
