English Pronunciation and Parish Enculturation Course for Priests and Religious

The Institute of Pastoral Studies and The English Language Learning Program at Loyola University Chicago are jointly providing a four-week summer 2018 intensive course for priests and religious.

The two main goals of the program are to:

  • Develop pronunciation skills that are necessary for overall intelligibility and comprehension, helping non-native English speakers better communicate with parishioners.
  • Build in-depth cultural understanding of American parishes and the roles played by clergy, women, and lay people.

This intensive course uses parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago as the classroom in a fun, reflective, and interactive way.  The course also helps improve listening comprehension and practice by using correct grammatical structures.  At the beginning of the course, each student will take an individualized test to determine required attention to specific pronunciation needs.
