Human Resources welcomes you to Loyola University Chicago! We have developed an online, centralized repository designed to help you learn about, and select benefits that will help you balance your professional and personal needs.

Loyola offers a robust benefits program, though available benefits vary based on your employee type. Choose the appropriate guide below to familiarize yourself with the benefits available to you based on your role:

Getting Started
Learning more about Loyola, including available benefits, will help you as you begin your new role.  Remember that you have 31 days from your date of hire to enroll in your benefits and coverage will be effective on the first day of the month following your date of hire (or on the actual date of hire, if hired on the first of the month). In fall of each year, Human Resources publishes the Benefits Highlights Booklet to announce annual Benefits Open Enrollment and share important benefit information for the upcoming year.

Loyola University Chicago offers you three medical plan options through Aetna, and prescription drug coverage through CVS Caremark. You have a choice of dental coverage through the Delta Dental PPO, as well as Guardian/First Commonwealth DMO (in Chicagoland/Northwest Indiana only). Loyola also offers vision plan coverage through VSP.

Consider investing in your retirement experience by saving (pre-tax) money in a Defined Contribution Retirement Plan (DCRP), a 403(b) plan administered by Transamerica Retirement Solutions (TRS). Savings steps taken now can help you and your family enjoy your retirement experience.
 
About the DCRP
All benefit-eligible LUC faculty and staff may enroll in and make elective contributions to the plan beginning with their date of hire.
  • Benefit-eligible employees receive University contributions of 5% of their salary after the first anniversary of employment. Employees can also receive additional matching contributions (up to a maximum of 5% of salary) from the University each pay period after the first anniversary of employment.
  • Benefit-eligible employees are 50% vested in any contributions from the University between the first and second anniversary of employment with Loyola. Employees will then become 100% vested in these contributions at the completion of their second anniversary of employment.

  • Contact the Retirement Call Center at 773.508.2770 or by visiting the Transamerica Scheduler website to schedule a meeting with a retirement planning consultant to learn more about financial literacy steps you should consider taking to build a healthy retirement portfolio.

Pre-tax monies can be set aside for tax-advantaged spending and savings accounts. If you are a full-time University benefit-eligible faculty or staff (.80 or higher), you are eligible to enroll in one or more flexible spending accounts.
  • The Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for health care and/or dependent day care expenses, used properly, can help save you money on these expenses. By participating in either or both of these flex accounts you can use tax-free dollars deducted from your paychecks to pay for certain out-of-pocket expenses. 
    • The dollars you save are from the following payroll taxes: Federal income tax; State income tax (in most cases); and Social Security (FICA) tax.
  • If you do not enroll in PPO 3, you can contribute to the Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
  • The Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is designed to pay for the care of children or adults who qualify so that you can work.
    • Eligible expenses include: In-home care; Care at another’s home; Nursery or preschool tuition; After-school care; Dependent care centers; and Summer day camp as long as that cost compares reasonably with other alternatives.
  • The Limited Flexible Spending Account (LFSA) may be put toward eligible dental and vision expenses only.
  • The Health Savings Account (HSA) is open to benefit-eligible faculty and staff who are enrolled in PPO 3 HSA plan and not enrolled in Medicare. HSAs work a bit differently than FSAs. By participating in an HSA, tax-free dollars deducted from your paycheck can be used to pay for out-of-pocket medical, dental and vision expenses in the current year, or save them for the future. You can even invest your account--any earnings are also tax-free.
The Wellness Program features financial, health, and wellness opportunities throughout the year, including educational programs, walks/runs to assist employees in leading a healthy lifestyles, and achieving financial wellness. You can earn wellness rewards in your paycheck (quarterly) by tracking and entering wellness points on the Empower Health website. Wellness rewards are taxable income.
(Staff Positions Only)

We all need time off to rest, take care of family matters, and to conduct personal business. In recognition of these needs, Loyola provides comprehensive, generous, and flexible time off policies. Loyola encourages you to take time off for renewal and rejuvenation— it’s good for you, which is good for the University.

Loyola provides basic life insurance to you equal to 1.5 times your annual salary, up to $500,000. You can choose to purchase supplemental life insurance and/or AD&D coverage for you and your dependent(s). In case of the unexpected, Loyola also offers additional accident and critical insurance coverage.

Loyola University Chicago offers a valuable tuition benefit program to full-time, benefit-eligible faculty and staff and/or their spouses, legally domiciled adults and dependent children up to the age of 24 after one year of continuous full-time employment.

Loyola University Chicago is committed to providing a safe campus experience for faculty, staff, and students. In order to create a safe and informed campus community, Campus Safety has implemented Loyola Alert, which is an emergency messaging service that provides personalized, time-sensitive alerts to students, faculty, staff and other personnel in the event of unforeseen events or potentially life-threatening emergencies at the lakeside campuses. Loyola Alert will immediately send messages to registered participants via the following communication channels:

  • Text messages to cell phones
  • Voice messages to land lines and cell phones
  • Written messages to personal e-mail accounts
