Pregnant & Parenting Resources

LOYOLA IS FIRMLY COMMITTED to creating a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for pregnant and parenting students, faculty and staff employees, and applicants. Discrimination against any person based on pregnancy or related conditions is a form of sex discrimination and prohibited under Title IX.

Additionally, under Title IX and other applicable laws, the University must make reasonable modifications to the University’s policies, practices, or procedures as necessary to prevent discrimination based on parental, family, or marital status, or based on pregnancy or related conditions. Reasonable modifications for pregnancy or related conditions for students and employees vary and are provided in consultation with the pregnant person (or a person who has a legal right to act on behalf of the pregnant person) and in response to the pregnant person’s circumstances.

At Loyola, pregnancy or related conditions include pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, medical conditions, or known limitations related to any of the above (such as gestational diabetes), and recovery from any of the above.

Lactation Spaces for Students & Employees

Students, faculty, and staff seeking a private space for breastfeeding or lactation can find a list of designated "personal wellness facilities" for each of Loyola's campuses here.

For employees:

  • Each department is responsible for providing the necessary accommodation for any request made within their area, consistent with Illinois' Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act.
  • Departments must make reasonable efforts to ensure employees can access personal wellness facilities found in the link above.
  • All personal wellness facilities should be clean and include a chair, table, electric outlets, and a door with a lock. A bathroom stall is not an acceptable location for lactation needs.

For students:

  • Students may also utilize the personal wellness facilities found in the link above.
  • Any student in need of support in accessing such spaces or seeking additional modifications related to their pregnancy or related condition(s) are invited to complete this Pregnant & Parenting Assistance Request Form.

Anyone (employee or student) encountering obstacles to equitable use of the lactation spaces is encouraged to submit a report to the Office for Equity & Compliance.

Information for Students

Reasonable modifications for students may include, but are not limited to: counseling services; option for voluntary leave of absence; utilization of lactation spaces; breaks during class or work to attend to health, breastfeeding, or lactation needs; extension of time for coursework and rescheduling of tests and examinations; and changes in physical equipment or supplies.

Students who are pregnant and/or seeking to request modifications or additional information about their rights related to pregnancy or related conditions should submit the Pregnant & Parenting Assistance Request Form, available at LUC.edu/equity, or contact any staff in either the OEC or ODOS.

For additional information regarding your rights as a pregnant and parenting student under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1872, please review Title IX Protects You From Discrimination At School and/or Discrimination Based on Pregnancy and Related Conditions Resource.

Information for Employees

Reasonable modifications for faculty or staff employees may include, but are not limited to: time off in accordance with the employee’s applicable employment benefits; utilization of lactation spaces; breaks during work to attend to health, breastfeeding, or lactation needs; and changes in physical equipment or supplied.

Faculty or staff employees who are pregnant and/or seeking to request modifications or additional information about their rights related to pregnancy or related conditions should contact Human Resources at 773.508.3140 or hr-lsc@luc.edu.

Obligation to Refer Pregnant Students for Resourcing

Under Title IX, all University employees to whom a pregnant student (or person authorized to act on the pregnant student’s behalf) discloses a pregnancy must inform the student that the student has rights related to their pregnancy or related conditions under Title IX and must provide the student contact information for the Title IX Coordinator.

Additional resources for faculty and staff to aid in meeting this obligation is coming soon.
