From the Director
Dear Honors Students, Prospective Students & Parents,
Welcome to Loyola University Chicago’s Interdisciplinary Honors Program. Each of you has gained admission to a program that prides itself on preparing students for the international community of the 21st century. Ours is a unique program where exceptional student achievements contribute to the excellence of the University, fostered by faculty and staff who are dedicated to the ideal of cura personalis, care of the whole person. Although honors students and faculty come from across the country and around the world, they share a common bond—the search for truth and meaning through analysis, discussion and research.
This selective and rigorous academic program prepares outstanding students to become successful leaders by offering courses that are interdisciplinary in method and international in scope. As a member of the Interdisciplinary Honors Program, you’ll interact closely with Loyola’s top professors, engage in service-learning opportunities, and graduate with a special honors designation on your diploma.
We offer an atmosphere charged with challenging teaching and enthusiastic student participation; professors and students work together in stimulating honors classes exploring critical issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. This intimate, collegial atmosphere helps develop a close working relationship among honors students and faculty. Highlights of the program include:
- An integrated common curriculum that models Loyola University Chicago’s commitment to a Transformative Education
- First-year living and learning community
- Small class sizes encourage close working relationships with faculty
- Individual advising
- Instruction in written and oral communication, scientific reasoning, and cultural and information literacy
- Courses stress interdisciplinary approaches and study
- Engaged-learning opportunities
I encourage you to embrace the challenge and opportunities offered by Loyola’s Honors Program. Honors faculty and staff are dedicated to providing you with the support necessary to be successful in your endeavors, allowing you to enter the ranks of our distinguished alumni so you too can share the benefits of all that a Loyola education brings.
I wish you all the best with a successful orientation and the opening of classes.
Claudio J. Katz, Ph.D.
