LU ChOICE - Loyola University Chicago Opportunities in Catholic Education Program
A program of Loyola University Chicago and an initiative of the Andrew M. Greeley Center for Catholic Education is for persons:
- Seeking to earn their master’s degree in teaching, with Illinois certification, in Elementary Education.
- Interested in completing the majority of their field experiences in a Catholic School in the city of Chicago.
- Wishing to participate in a spiritual formation program grounded in the Jesuit tradition.
Distinguishing characteristics of LU ChOICE candidates:
- Persons seeking to earn their certification in Elementary Education. All members will be enrolled in the master’s degree in Elementary Education at Loyola University Chicago. Classes are offered late afternoon/early evenings.
- The MEd in Elementary Education is designed for individuals looking to make a difference in the lives of children. Graduates of the program will receive a Professional Educator License (PEL) with elementary and ESL endorsements with the potential to add bilingual, learning behavior specialist (LBS1) specialists, and middle grades endorsements.
- This field-based program is designed for individuals seeking to secure an initial teaching license to teach in elementary schools, whether that be in general education, special education, or ESL and bilingual education
- Persons interested in receiving the majority of their field experiences in a Catholic School setting in the city of Chicago. Each Fall and Spring members are placed in a Catholic School in the city of Chicago to complete their required field experiences. The program can also connect members to schools looking to hire persons for full-time classroom positions. The work done at a school, as an employee, can be counted toward the field experience requirement. If you are currently working in a Catholic school, it is not necessary to move to another school. If you are working in a classroom setting, that work can be counted toward your field experience requirement.
- Persons interested in being a part of a spiritual formation program, grounded in the Jesuit tradition. The spiritual formation program consists of one day of reflection and one day long retreat each semester.
- Persons interested in having a mentor assigned from the program to guide the participant in teacher development.
- Persons currently working in a Catholic School, (teachers, paraprofessionals, etc.) in the city of Chicago, especially in the south and west sides of the city, seeking elementary teacher certification.
- Persons interested in making a two-year commitment to the degree program as well as field experiences in a partner Catholic School.
A few goals of the program:
- Keep persons already in a Catholic school at the Catholic school.
- Keep persons from the community in the community.
- Provide a pathway to licensure for people already working in Catholic schools without it.
- Create a pipeline of well-trained teachers interested in teaching in Catholic Schools.
- Form the whole person, mind, and spirit.
Graduate Studies: MEd Elementary Education

MEd in Elementary Education Program Information
Spirituality
An active spiritual formation program is at the core of all aspects of LU ChOICE. As teachers in Catholic schools, teachers nurture the faith development of their students and share their own faith journeys. Communities pray/reflect together and encourage the spiritual development of each member.
LU ChOICE teachers participate in retreats, days of reflection, and come together to reflect on their experiences.
Applicants need not be Catholic to apply. However, all applicants must be willing to study and work in a Catholic university and elementary school.
