Aana Marie Vigen

I earned a BA from St. Olaf College, an MA in Theology and Ethics from the Graduate Theological Union, and a PhD in Social &Theological Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. I am an active lay member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and served on the national ELCA Genetics Taskforce from 2008–2011. I serve on the national Board of the Society of Christian Ethics (SCE).

My overall area of specialization is healthcare/medical ethics. In particular, I focus on racial-ethnic and socio-economic inequalities in health and healthcare in the US and globally. Presently I am doing research on prenatal genetic testing and Christian ethics, incorporating ethnographic interviews with genetic counselors and new moms of color. Other interests include: The Intersections among Human Health & Ecological Health in the Context of Climate Change; Notions of "Living & Dying Well"; Feminist Ethics; White Anti-Racism.

I co-authored and co-edited (with Christian Scharen) Ethnography as Christian Theology and Ethics (formerly T&T Clark now Bloomsbury, 2011). I have also contributed several invited chapters to anthologies, published my own monograph and co-edited another volume. I have also written popular pieces (guest blog posts, online articles) and Op Eds.
