Selection Criteria

The awards and honors below include specific requirements and parameters that if not met, will either disqualify or not apply to nominees.  Please read the selection criteria very carefully to ensure eligible nominees are recognized.

*The 2017-2018 Excellence Awards Nominations have closed. 

The Weekend of Excellence 2018 runs from Thursday-Sunday, April 19-22, with the Excellence Awards Saturday, April 21, 7-9 pm in our Damen Student Center, by RSVP only.

 

 

  • All discussions, deliberations, e-mails, and documentation related to the Excellence Awards Selection Process are considered confidential and will not be discussed with anyone outside the Committee, except the Vice President for the Division of Student Development.
  • The names of finalist are considered confidential and will not be discussed outside the Committee.  However, current lists of nominees may be shared with university staff to assist in ensuring as many student as possible are nominated.
  • If a Committee Member, or relative of a Committee Member, is nominated for an award, they will recuse themselves from further participation in the selection for that particular award.
  • If any Committee Member feels they will lack objectivity in the selection process for a particular award, or are biased in any way, they will recuse themselves from the selection process for that award.
  • If any Committee Member is a member of any organization nominated for an award, they will recuse themselves from further participation in the selection for that award.

Campaigning for votes will disqualify you or your organization as a candidate for the 2016-2017 Damen Awards. Campaigning by the nominee or via proxy, includes but is not limited to: banners, flyers, social media posts, mass emails, and similar forms of publicity.

  • Any currently enrolled undergraduate student is eligible.
  • No nominee may receive this award for two consecutive years.
  • A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate nominee.
  • Self-nominations are prohibited.
  • A maximum of ten to twelve awards will be presented each year.
  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominees screened by Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution and Behavioral Concerns Team.
  • VP of Student Development/DSD screens nominee list.
  • Students vote on finalists.

  • Nominees must be a rising sophomore [someone who anticipates being enrolled as sophomore as of the start of Fall Semester 2018].
  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018, and a maximum of no more than 60 credits as of that date.
  • Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
  • Self-nominations are prohibited.
  • Campaigning for nominations or votes is prohibited and will result in disqualification.
  • Only a single award will be presented each year.
  • Vice President for Student Development, Student Leadership Development, Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution, Behavioral Concerns Team, Student Activities and Greek Affairs, Residence Life, Campus Ministry, Office of First Year Experience, and First and Second Year Advising will vet nominee list and make recommendations.
  • Loyola undergraduate students vote on finalists.

Rubrics for Determining Eligibility/Success


Consistent with First Year goals contained in
“The Loyola Experience: The Four-Year Plan for Student Transformation.”

  • Develop the habits necessary to engage in challenging intellectual work.
  • Participate in the class and in extracurricular activities.
  • Build relationships and develop support group with other students, mentors, staff, and faculty members.
  • Formulate an integrated curricular and cocurricular plan.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the mission and core values that form the Loyola identity.

  • Nominee must be a Rising Junior [someone who anticipates being enrolled as a junior, with 60 credits, as of September 2018, but no more than 90 credits as of that date].
  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of 30 credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
  • Self-nominations are prohibited.
  • Campaigning for nominations or votes is prohibited and will result in disqualification.
  • Only a single award will be presented each year.

  • Execute the actions necessary to engage in challenging intellectual work.
  • Articulate personal values and discern how you form personal, academic, and professional goals and decisions.
  • Develop knowledge and compassion for the mission and core values that comprise the Loyola identity.
  • Continue developing and nurturing relationships with peers, faculty, staff, and other members of the Loyola community.
  • Deepen your understanding of your own faith and learn about others faiths, religions, and world views.

Faculty Member of the Year Award Criteria & Selection Process

  • Any full-time, part-time, tenure-track or adjunct faculty member on any Loyola campus is eligible.
  • Previous award winners are eligible for nomination, but not finalist and winner.
  • Nominee must be nominated by an undergraduate or graduate Loyola student enrolled during that academic year.
  • Only a single award is presented each year.
  • Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.
  • The winner is selected by plurality vote of our entire student body.

 Staff Member of the Year Award Criteria & Selection Process

  • Any full-time or part-time staff member on any Loyola campus is eligible.
  • Previous award winners are eligible for nomination, but not finalist and winner.
  • Nominee must be nominated by an undergraduate or graduate Loyola student enrolled during that academic year.
  • Only a single award is presented each year.
  • Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.
  • The winner is selected by plurality vote of our entire student body.

  • Nominee must be a Rising Senior [someone who will be enrolled as senior in Fall 2018].
  • Nominee must anticipate completing 90 credits by September 2018.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
  • Self-nominations are prohibited.
  • No more than 25 members may be selected in a given year.
  • Nominee must have completed two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and completed a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2017.
  • Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  • Rising seniors eligible whether graduating before, in, or after May 2018.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominees screened by Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution and Behavioral Concerns Team.
  • Intentional selection of diverse cohort, including race, ethnicity, religion, major, gender, sexual orientation.
  • Need recommendation from faculty member who has taught at least one three-credit course at Loyola.
  • List must be approved by President, VP of Student Development, VP of Advancement.

Note: For all of the Diversity awards, the following apply:

  • Only a single award is presented each year.
  • Selected by Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Selection Committee.

Student Diversity Transformative Education Award

  • Any full-time, part-time, tenure-track or adjunct faculty member is eligible.
  • Nominee must have worked at Loyola University Chicago for at least two semesters, or the equivalent, as of January 2017.
  • Previous award winners are not eligible for nomination.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, or administrators.
  • Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.

Student Diversity Lifelong Commitment to Justice Award

  • Any full-time or part-time staff member is eligible.
  • Previous award winners are not eligible for nomination.
  • Nominee must have worked at Loyola University Chicago for at least twelve months as of January 1, 2017.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
  • Human Resources screens the nominee list for approval.

Student Diversity Set the World on Fire Award

  • Nominee must have graduate from Loyola University Chicago.
  • Previous award winners are not eligible for nomination.
  • Nominee must have worked at Loyola University Chicago for at least twelve months as of January 1, 2017.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.

Student Diversity Emerging Leader Award

  • Nominee must be a current first or second year student [someone who will have completed less than 60 credits at Loyola University Chicago, as of the time of nominations for this award].
  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • A faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate nominee.

Student Diversity Social Justice in Action Award

  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.

Student Diversity Motivational Member Award

  • Nominee must be a member of a registered  or sponsored student organization.
  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago and anticipate completing a minimum of thirty credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Faculty, staff, student, or administrator must nominate nominee.

Student Diversity Father Arrupe Award

  • Nominee must anticipate completing two semesters, or the equivalent, at Loyola University Chicago as a graduate student and anticipate completing a minimum of fifteen credits at Loyola University Chicago by September 2018.
  • Nominee must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above, as listed in LOCUS.
  • Nominee must be nominated by faculty, staff, students, administrators.
