2024 Title IX Final Rule Update

On Monday, April 29, 2024, the Department of Education officially published a new Final Rule updating the requirements for colleges and universities – including Loyola – to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs receiving federal financial assistance. The new regulations become effective and applicable on August 1, 2024.

The Office for Equity & Compliance (OEC), which administers Title IX’s requirements at Loyola, has been preparing for these anticipated regulatory changes since 2022, collecting student feedback that will help inform policy decisions related to how the University responds to reports and complaints of sex-based discrimination, harassment, and other misconduct. Through participation in NASPA’s Culture of Respect initiative, the OEC and various campus partners have hosted focus groups and community forums, engaged with student organizations, and administered a campuswide “SPEAK UP” survey, all of which have provided helpful insights about how best to meet the needs of our campus community.

With the release of the Final Rule, work is already underway to digest the new regulations and consider what policy changes will both ensure compliance with the law and incorporate high-impact practices aligned with Loyola’s mission and values. This work will continue throughout the Summer, and will include input from the Division of Student Development, Human Resources, Office of the Provost, and other key partners.
