I'm interested in the ways that education occurs across different times and different places in ways that combine in-school and out-school experiences to create more meaningful and significant learning experiences.  As a social studies educator, I investigate how youths learn history through their social networks as well as around their cities.  As a teacher educator, I work with teachers and teacher-candidates to consider how to foster student inquiry into the surrounding history.  Finally, as a historian and as a theorist, I explore how non-school institutions have worked with and against schools in efforts to reshape the education of youth.
