Detained Immigrants Representation

Detained Immigrants Representation

Due to continued interest in this project, this page will continue to accept donations until 3/9/19.

The current political situation has led to the increasing detention of immigrants within the United States—and immigrants facing detention and removal are not guaranteed access to a lawyer. Despite this, the government is represented by a trained attorney who can argue for deportation, regardless of whether the immigrant is represented. The stakes for immigrants are high, including prolonged detention, deportation, and family separation. There is a critical need for legal representation of immigrants.  Immigrants who have access to an attorney are ten times more likely to receive immigration protection. For many, especially those seeking asylum, working with an attorney can mean life or death.

Loyola’s Immigration Law Practicum, in collaboration with student organizations Student Advocates for Families at the Border (SAFAB), and the Immigration Rights Coalition, will provide an opportunity for School of Law students, faculty, and alumni to provide direct representation of detained immigrants around the country where the need is greatest. Faculty and practitioners will supervise students, with one practitioner per four students.

Our goal of $15,000 covers up to 12 students and 4 site supervisors. Budget includes estimated air travel, car rental, insurance, daily per diem, hotel, and gas. Your gift will directly impact immigrants who desperately need legal representation.
