Families & Guests

We welcome families and friends of graduates to join us on campus at the Commencement ceremonies May 7-11, 2019 and August 10, 2019.  Please see our links below to assist you with your planning.

All Guests should go directly to Gentile Arena (May Commencement) or Mundelein Auditorium (August Commencement) where seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not accompany your graduate to the preparation areas. Also note that guests will not be permitted to find seats during the Faculty Processional.

The Arrupe College, College of Arts and Sciences, Quinlan School of Business Undergraduates, and Stritch School of Medicine require guest tickets for admission to their ceremonies. Graduates apply for these tickets during their Commencement registration process. 

Frequently asked questions

The only ceremonies that require tickets are Arrupe College, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Quinlan School of Business, and the Stritch School of Medicine.

For Spring Ceremony: Doors to Gentile Arena open one hour before each ceremony.  It is encouraged that you arrive 45 minutes before the ceremony.

For Arrupe College: Doors to Mundelein Auditorium open one hour before the ceremony. It is encouraged that you arrive 45 minutes before the ceremony.

For Spring Ceremony: There is an Alumni Welcome Reception after each ceremony for graduates in the West Quad, weather permitting. This is also where graduates and their families can take photos after the ceremony.

For Arrupe College: There is an Alumni Welcome Reception on the East Quad, weather permitting. This is also where graduates and their families can take photos after the ceremony.

We do not allow strollers of any type (umbrella or folding) into Gentile Arena or in Mundelein Auditorium. Limited non-secure strolling parking is available.

The Commencement ceremonies last approximately 90 minutes but do vary depending on the number of graduates.

For Spring Ceremony: All ceremonies are held in the Gentile Arena on Lake Shore Campus, 1032 W. Sheridan Rd., Chicago, IL 60660.

Arrupe College: The ceremony is held in Mundelein Auditorium on Lake Shore Campus, 1020 W Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60660.

Public transportation: Graduates and their guests are strongly encouraged to use public transportation whenever possible. Visit Chicago Transit Authority for additional public transportation information. Please note:

  • Loyola is most easily accessible via the “El,” or elevated train. On the Red Line, the Loyola stop drops you off directly across from campus.
  • Both the 147 and 151 buses also have many stops close to campus, including ones at Winthrop Avenue and directly across from campus at the Loyola “El” stop on the Red Line.

For Spring Ceremony: All ceremonies are held in the Gentile Arena on Lake Shore Campus, 1032 W. Sheridan Rd., Chicago, IL 60660.

Arrupe College: The ceremony is held in Mundelein Auditorium on Lake Shore Campus.

We look forward to welcoming thousands of students, faculty, staff, and guests at Commencement ceremonies during the week of May 6. During this time, use of the Main Parking Structure will be limited to graduating students and their guests. Alternatively, faculty and staff can park in Fordham Garage, West Loyola Lot at 1236 W. Loyola Ave., Contractor’s Lot at 1227 W. Loyola Ave., and St. Louis Lot at 1245 W. Loyola Ave. (entry to the St. Louis Lot is in the alley). We encourage you to give yourself extra time to get to campus, as we expect more traffic in the area. We also recommend that you consider utilizing the CTA or carpooling. Please be advised that we are expecting the heaviest traffic on Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10.

Parking passes for the main garage are required only for those individuals attending either a College of Arts & Sciences ceremony or the Quinlan School of Business ceremony. This pass allows one car into the main garage for the duration of the ceremony. Students can pick up these passes from their dean’s office.

Parking in the main structure for all other ceremonies is free and does not require a parking pass.

Loyola’s Campus Safety works closely with the Chicago Police Department to manage traffic during Commencement weekend. Please adhere to all instructions given by these officers as they strive to ensure the safety of all our graduates and their families.

For Spring Ceremony: Accessible seating is available for guests with disabilities. Areas are designated for individuals using wheelchairs, persons with limited mobility, and guests with visual or hearing impairments. Doors open an hour and a half prior to the ceremony and staff will be available to assist you with finding seating.

Commencement ceremonies take place inside an arena with stadium seating, which is reached via a long concourse. As a result, the walk from the parking structure to guest seating in the arena is lengthy. Please plan accordingly.

For Arrupe College: Accessible seating is available for guests with disabilities and up to one (1) companion. This seating area is designated for individuals using wheelchairs, persons with limited mobility, and guests with visual or hearing impairments. You are encouraged to arrive early to be seated in this section as availability it on a first come first served bases.

Wheelchairs: Wheelchairs are allowed inside the arena and auditorium but are not provided for guests. Please bring if needed for guests who have trouble walking distances. 

Golf carts: There will be golf carts shuttling people to the ceremonies from the main parking structure and other campus locations.

Hearing impairment: There will be a sign-language interpreter onsite for all Commencement ceremonies.

Guests will not be allowed to approach the stage during the ceremony in order to take photos and/or videos. We appreciate your cooperation as we strive to ensure the safety of all graduates and guests. 

Photos: Grad Images will take photos of each student during the ceremony that will be available for purchase. A free photo proof and mail form will be mailed to graduates a few weeks after the ceremony. Graduates may also view their photo proofs online.
