Academic Internships

For a course to be designated as “Academic Internship”, satisfying the University Engaged Learning requirement, it must meet all the criteria below.  Criteria for academic internship courses are based on research and best practices, the CAS Standards for Internships (2009), and the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Position Statement on U.S. Internships (2011).

  1. The academic course in which students engage in an internship clearly states the hours requirement (minimum of 100 hours of work).
  2. The internship must be approved by the faculty instructor, as it is the extension of the classroom and applying knowledge gained in the classroom.
  3. The internship experience has a clear position description with a professional organization related to their field of study, educational goals and/or career and vocational aspirations.
  4. The learning objectives related to the internship experience are clearly articulated related to their field of study, educational goals and/or career and vocational aspirations.
  5. There is supervision and feedback by a professional with expertise related to their field of study, educational goals and/or career and vocational aspirations.
  6. The syllabus assignments include reflection assignments and a final synthesis project integrated into the course.

All courses that have been approved to satisfy the University Engaged Learning Requirement are designated with an "E" appended to their section number, e.g. ANTH 301-01E.  Comprehensive listings of ALL approved Engaged Learning classes offered each semester can be found in LOCUS.

Please Note: Past internships are not considered for Engaged Learning credit. Students with an approved internship must enroll in an academic internship course that has been designated for Engaged Learning by the University’s Engaged Learning Subcommittee of the Board of Undergraduate Studies (BUS). The academic internship course and the internship experience are done concurrently (in the same semester).

 

 


College of Arts and Sciences

AFR 397:  Capstone/Internship (3)
Approval by the Director or her/his designee of an internship site or study abroad location in the academic term preceding intended Capstone enrollment. Journal-keeping is required throughout the experience/internship and demonstrated application of research methods acquired in BWS 304. Agency, institution, or organization-based internship experiences require a minimum of 225 verified service hours for 3 credit hours.

ANTH 396:  Internship in Anthropology (3)
This course is designed to enhance student engagement by facilitating internship experiences within the department or in museums, service-oriented organizations, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Experiential learning is combined with rigorous academic work. This course may serve, if appropriate, as a capstone experience.  Outcome: Students will produce a research paper, project, proposal, or assessed piece that reflects the application and integration of anthropological theory, methods, or techniques, to the internship experience.

BIOI 398:  Bioinformatics Internship (1-4)
An independent research experience involving laboratory experiments, computer program development, or statistical analysis or any combination of these performed off-campus under the mentorship of a Bioinformatics scientist not affiliated with Loyola.  Outcome:  All students will acquire skills to perform and report on independent research and to be intellectually responsible for evaluating their own and related work.  Other outcomes will include at least one of the following:  Experimental expertise, statistical evaluation of data sets, design and use of computational tools.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

BIOL 398:  Internship in Biology (1-3)
A supervised field placement intended to give students training or work experience in aspects of biology that cannot be obtained on campus.  Outcome: Students will acquire practical experience in biology-related job settings.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

CHEM 399: Internship in Biochemistry or Chemestry (1-3)
A supervised field placement to give students training or work experience in aspects of biochemistry or chemistry that are not commonly available on campus. Students will work outside the classroom (e.g., industrial setting or national lab) applying and extending their biochemistry or chemistry skills, typically for at least 150 hours to receive 3 credits or for more than 100 hours for 2 credits.

CLST  382 - Internship in Classical Studies (3)
Students complete a semester-long internship (100 hours minimum) that builds on their training in Classical Studies.  Outcomes: Students will gain practical experience while applying theories and techniques gained  from coursework.

COMP 391:  Internship in Computer Science (1-6)
Students work outside the classroom applying and extending their computer science skills, typically for at least 150 hours for 3 credits.  A memorandum of understanding is required between a student, his or her employer, and the Undergraduate Program Director, followed by final reports from the student and the employer.  Outcome:  Application of classroom skills to real-world situations.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

CJC 390:  Capstone Experience Internship  (1-6)
The purpose of this course is to enhance the student's development and learning through observational and participatory experience in criminal justice agencies.  Outcome:  Students will be able to contribute in a meaningful way to the operation of a specific criminal justice agency and be able to identify and describe the link between their field experience and prior courses.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

DANC 394:  Internship in Dance (1-6)
Dance students complete a semester long internship providing an opportunity to use their technical, research or organizations skills in a professional setting. Students must complete and reflect upon 50 hours of internship experience per credit hour that is pre-approved by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Department permission is required.  Outcome: Students gain professional experience working at a dance organization while reflecting on their work experience and applying theories and techniques acquired from their first dance courses.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

ENGL 393:  Teaching English to Adults Internship (service-learning)  (1-3)
This course offers training and practical experience in tutoring adults in written and spoken English in a volunteer literacy program at Loyola University.   Students examine literacy issues and write a research paper.  Outcome:  Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of societal and cultural factors affecting literacy, and will develop communication and critical thinking skills.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

ENGL 394:  Internship (3)
This course provides on-the-job experience for majors in adapting their writing and analytical skills to the needs of such fields as publishing, editing, and public relations.  Outcome:  Students will be able to analyze their experience in terms of the skills they brought to their jobs, what they learned about the fields they worked in, and what new skills they developed as a result of their experiences.     

FNAR 368:  Gallery Internship (1-4)
An introduction to the various aspects of museum/gallery administration, scholarship, and mechanics of organizing and mounting exhibitions.  On-campus internships are available at LUMA and the Department of Fine Arts Gallery.  Some off-campus internships can be arranged.  Outcome: Students will gain practical experience the professional world and will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the various aspects of gallery/museum administration, scholarship, and exhibition preparation.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

FNAR 380:  Internship I  (1-4)
Visual Communication majors complete an internship providing an opportunity to use their visual and technical skills in a professional setting.  Outcome: Students work with others to develop and complete projects on a predetermined schedule; they get the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field; they find out how well they are doing as judged by the world outside the classroom.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

FNAR 381:  Internship II (1-4)
Visual Communication majors complete an internship providing an opportunity to use their visual and technical skills in a professional setting.  Outcome: Students work with others to develop and complete projects on a predetermined schedule; they get the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field; they find out how well they are doing as judged by the world outside the classroom.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

FREN 395:  Internship (3)
Students who have secured an internship related to the French-speaking world may complete an internship for credit, with the approval of a faculty member. Students complete reflective assignments and a final project in French, in consultation with the faculty member. Enrollment Conditions: Completion of at least one 300-level French course and instructor's consent. Outcomes: Students gain professional experience while working with the French language and Francophone cultures and applying skills they have learned in the classroom.

FRSC 390: Forensic Science Internship (3) (Effective Fall 2017)
The course provides students with a real-world experience working as an intern in a forensicscience focused laboratory or agency.

HIST 398:  History Internship (3)
This course provides three hours credit for students engaged in history related internships in the public and private sectors.  Outcome: Students will be able to obtain an internship position, to learn on-the-job from an experienced practitioner in a wide variety of public and private sector settings, to draw links between their present situation and historical research, and to develop critical thinking and communication skills.

Service Learning/Internship

GIST 370:  Internship in Global and International Studies (3-6)
Students earn course credit while serving as an intern in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses relevant to the field of global and international studies.  Outcome: Students will obtain in-depth knowledge and practical experience in a professional work setting relevant to the student’s future career path.

GIST 370/ROST 390:  Internship in Global and International Studies:  Rome Campus (3-6)
Students earn course credit while serving as an intern in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses relevant to the field of global and international studies.  Outcome: Students will obtain in-depth knowledge and practical experience in a professional work setting relevant to the student’s future career path.

ITAL 395:  Internship (3)
The internship will enable students to gain practical experience in working in Italian government institutions in Chicago (such as the Italian Cultural Institute) or working in businesses or education.  Outcome: Students will work 4-8 per week and reflect on their experience in conversations with supervising professor and other interns.

The internship will enable students to gain practical experience in working in Italian government institutions) or working in businesses or education.  Outcome: Students will work 4-8 per week and reflect on their experience in conversations with supervising professor and other interns.

MUSC 394:  Internship in Music (1-6)
Music students complete a semester long internship providing an opportunity to use their technical, research or organizations skills in a professional setting. Students must complete and reflect upon 50 hours of internship experience per credit hour that is pre-approved by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Department permission required.   Outcome: Students gain professional experience working at a music organization while reflecting on their work experience and applying theories and techniques acquired from their music courses.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

PLSC 370:  Fieldwork in Political Science: Internship (1-6)
Practical experience in political and governmental agencies and organizations in Chicago and Washington, D.C.  Outcome: Students learn about different forms of public service and the ethical responsibilities of civic engagement.  Working in a professional office for fifteen weeks allows students to experience the world of public service first-hand.  Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of models of leadership and public service by working with supervisors who are normally leaders in their fields.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

POST 395:  Polish Studies Capstone (3)
Capstone course to the POST Minor program. This is a tutorial course with a service learning component that serves an integrative purpose. In the tutorial students will focus on a specific issue or theme in POST. The syllabus will reflect the research interests of the faculty member who administers the course.  Outcomes: Students will be able to integrate their coursework in the POST minor with their major concentration

PSYC 390:  Internship in Psychology (3)
Capstone service-learning experience for senior psychology majors, involving application and development of psychological knowledge and skills through an internship (100 hours) in a human service organization or applied research setting, combined with academic classroom activities.  Outcomes: Students gain knowledge and skills in:  function and operation of human service agencies or applied research settings; values and ethics in work settings;  written communication; theories and practices of helping and/or applied research;  interacting effectively with diverse clients, peers and supervisors; and drawing connections between theory and practice.

PSYC 392:  Internship in Applied Psychology (3)
Capstone service-learning experience for senior psychology majors, involving application and development of psychological knowledge and skills through an internship (100 hours) in an applied research setting, combined with academic classroom activities.  Students prepare a portfolio integrating their field work with the psychology major.  Outcomes: Students gain knowledge and skills in:  values and ethics in work settings; interacting effectively with diverse clients, peers and supervisors; drawing connections between theory, research, and practice.

SOCL 380:  Internship (3-6)
Supervised field experience for students working in a selected community organization, government agency, social agency, or business.  Outcome:  Students have opportunity to apply the skills and analysis of sociology to a concrete situation.         

SPAN 395:  Internship (3)
The internship will allow students to work in a variety of settings using Spanish: business, education, government, or social service agencies.  Outcome: Students will gain practical experience in speaking and writing Spanish.

STAT 391:  Internship in Actuarial Science (1-3)
This course offers an opportunity to obtain experience in actuarial science in a professional environment; placement requires approval of the internship coordinator and acceptance by an employer.  Outcome:  Students will obtain firsthand experience doing actuarial work in a real world environment.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

THEO 348:  Supervised Ministry (3)
Placement in a ministerial position, on-site supervision, and biweekly individual or group meetings with the course director is required.  Outcome: Students will be able to demonstrate how a sacramental system of aesthetics is often embedded in cultural artifacts.

THTR 394:  Internship in Theatre (1-6)
Theatre students complete a semester long internship providing an opportunity to use their technical, research or organizations skills in a professional setting. Students must complete and reflect upon 50 hours of internship experience per credit hour that is pre-approved by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Department Permission Required.  Outcome: Students gain professional experience working at a theatrical organization while reflecting on their work experience and applying theories and techniques acquired from their theatre courses.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

WSGS 398:  Women’s Studies Internship (3)
This course uses supervised project-based experiential learning to allow students the opportunity to apply feminist analysis and practical skills to a student-designed project that will be completed within the timeframe of a course term.  Outcome:  Students learn application of feminist concepts and principles to pragmatic outcomes; leadership, planning, time management, and assessment skills.

Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, & Scholarship/Office of the Provost

EXPL 390:  Internship Seminar:  Organizational Change and Community Leadership (3)
This course is a seminar course focusing on organizational leadership and change through a 100 hour internship experience with a non-profit organization, government agency, or business organization, pre-approved by the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, & Scholarship.  Outcome: Students will gain professional experience at an organization while reflecting on their work experience and applying theories of organizational leadership, civic engagement, community development, and leadership in the community.

EXPL 393:  Seminar in Integrative Leadership (3)
This is a seminar course for students leaders in approved co-curricular programs (e.g., ABI leaders, student organization executive board, Loyola4Chicago leaders, etc.). Students in this course will complete at least 100 hours in a leadership experience in the context of integrative leadership theory culminating in a portfolio to demonstrate holistic leadership capacity.   
Outcomes: 1. Develop understanding of leadership theories, reflection on actions, and integrative leadership theories. 2. Enhance connection to the institution through leadership experience, and academic and professional learning and development. 3. Produce an integrative professional portfolio.

Institute of Environmental Sustainability

ENVS 395:  Environmental Internship (3)
Students seek out and engage in a semester- or summer-long internship with a civic, business, governmental, or academic group providing hands-on experience in work on environmental issues.  Outcome:  Students will demonstrate, through daily activity logs and a comprehensive final report, a clear understanding of the environmental context and practical applications of their internship experience.

Interdisciplinary Honors Program

HONR 290: Literacy Center (3)
This course offers training and practical experience in tutoring adults in written and spoken English at the Loyola Community Literacy Center.  Students tutor adult learners, some of whom are native English speakers preparing for the GED or improving their literacy skills.  Others are immigrants or refugees who may know some English or no English.  Students must attend an orientation as well as bi-weekly class meetings and tutor one or two evenings a week.  Students are required to keep and submit a weekly journal of their experiences, examine a textbook and journal articles concerned with literacy and adult education, write four papers throughout the semester, and prepare a final paper or project.

HONR 370: Fieldwork in Honors: Internship (1-3)
Provide students with valuable work experience in a professional field connected with their academic program. It allows students to apply and further develop their knowledge and skills through an internship in a non-academic setting. The course is also intended to serve as a "bridge" between college and career. This internship presents an opportunity for students to gain valuable professional experience as an intern in public or private institutions engaged in public service projects. HONR 370 will satisfy the "service" requirement for all Honors students.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

EXCM 395: Clinical Internship and Patient Management (4)
Practical experience working with exercise physiologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation therapists, and others, in cardiac care and orthopedic rehabilitation.

HSM 361: Health Systems Management Internship Seminar  (1)
The seminar is designed to support student learning from their internships and to assist students in preparing for the transition from the university to a career.   Outcomes: Students will be able to apply and synthesize theory from courses across the HSM curriculum.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

PUBH 310: Public Health Internship (3)
This practival internship course will integrate theory, where students will unpack the complexities of Public Health and gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of professionals. Careers in Public Health are multidimensional, students will integrate real world experience reflecting on experiences of leadership, health equity, community engagement, and professional development.

PUBH 399: Capstone (3)
This course is a cumulative, integrative and scholarly or applied experience of inquiry project. It may include internships, service-learning projects, senior seminars, portfolio projects, or research paper. The project provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate proficiency in effective communication skills through a written report and oral presentation. 

School of Business

BSAD 351:  Business Internship – Engaged Learning (3)
Business Internship connects academic learning with the internship experience.  Students will be challenged to analyze the theory and practices from the world of work that impact the ethics of leading, interpersonal and organizational dynamics, and competent work place contributions required for success in the modern business world.  Concepts associated with internship/experiential learning as related to career development will be addressed.

IBUS 370: International Business Internship - Engaged Learning (3)
Business Internship connects academic learning with the internship experience.  Students will be challenged to analyze the theory and practices from the world of work that impact the ethics of leading, interpersonal and organizational dynamics, and competent work place contributions required for success in the modern business world.  Concepts associated with internship/experiential learning as related to career development will be addressed.  Outcomes: a. Developing a foundation on which a student may build a career  b. Understanding the role of the Jesuit tradition as it relates to leadership and service

COMM 391:  Advertising /Public Relations Internship (3)
This supervised field experience enables students to have hands-on professional learning at a wide range of agency, corporate, and non-profit organizations as the basis for learning and refining professional communication skills.

COMM 392:  Journalism Internship (3)
This supervised field experience enables students to have hands-on professional learning at a wide range of agency, corporate, and non-profit organizations as the basis for learning and refining professional communication skills.  Students gain proficiency in professional conduct and industry skills while systematically reflecting on their experiences.

CPST 398:  Professional Studies Internship Seminar (2)
The Internship Seminar is a way to earn academic credit for an internship completed while finishing one of the SCPS BA programs.  Students taking CPST 398 must take CPST 399 the following session to get complete credit for the internship.  Outcomes:  Applied experience in a professional setting.

CPST 399:  Professional Studies Internship Seminar (2)
The Internship Seminar is a way to earn academic credit for an internship completed while finishing one of the SCPS BA programs.  Students taking CPST 399 must first take CPST 398 the previous session to get complete credit for the internship. Outcomes:  Applied experience in a professional setting.

ELPS 265: Cultural and Educational Policy Studies Internship (3)
The Internship in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies course is intended to help students integrate theoretical and research coursework with a practical field-based experience to reflect on their own development as professionals working in the field of education. Outcomes: Students develop and refine their professional skills and competencies. Students will be able to identify key education issues domestically and/or internationally and critically analyze them in terms of the relationship(s) between policy and practice.

School of Nursing

CMAN 380:  Community Health (2-3)
Nursing and public health concepts provide theoretical basis for care of families, aggregates, and communities outside institutional settings. Role of community health nurses in caring for specific aggregates is described. Clinical experiences are provided for application of concepts and implementation of nursing interventions in a variety of community settings.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

School of Social Work

SOWK 330: Field I & Simulated Experience (3.5)
This course provides a structured practice experience in a social agency setting where classroom theory is utilized and integrated with beginning practice skills.  Students will develop an understanding of assessment, modes of intervention, client-worker relationship building, and strategies to assess practice.

SOWK 340:  Field II & Simulated Experience (3.5)
Builds on the practice experience acquired in 330. There is continued emphasis on utilization and integration of theory.

ENGL 394:  Internship (3)
This course provides on-the-job experience for majors in adapting their writing and analytical skills to the needs of such fields as publishing, editing, and public relations.  Outcome:  Students will be able to analyze their experience in terms of the skills they brought to their jobs, what they learned about the fields they worked in, and what new skills they developed as a result of their experiences.     

FNAR 368:  Gallery Internship (1-4)
An introduction to the various aspects of museum/gallery administration, scholarship, and mechanics of organizing and mounting exhibitions.  On-campus internships are available at LUMA and the Department of Fine Arts Gallery.  Some off-campus internships can be arranged.  Outcome: Students will gain practical experience the professional world and will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the various aspects of gallery/museum administration, scholarship, and exhibition preparation.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

Students who have secured an internship related to the French-speaking world may complete an internship for credit, with the approval of a faculty member. Students complete reflective assignments and a final project in French, in consultation with the faculty member. Enrollment Conditions: Completion of at least one 300-level French course and instructor's consent. Outcomes: Students gain professional experience while working with the French language and Francophone cultures and applying skills they have learned in the classroom.

PLSC 370:  Fieldwork in Political Science: Internship (1-6)
Practical experience in political and governmental agencies and organizations in Chicago and Washington, D.C.  Outcome: Students learn about different forms of public service and the ethical responsibilities of civic engagement.  Working in a professional office for fifteen weeks allows students to experience the world of public service first-hand.  Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of models of leadership and public service by working with supervisors who are normally leaders in their fields.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

POST 395:  Polish Studies Capstone (3)
Capstone course to the POST Minor program. This is a tutorial course with a service learning component that serves an integrative purpose. In the tutorial students will focus on a specific issue or theme in POST. The syllabus will reflect the research interests of the faculty member who administers the course.  Outcomes: Students will be able to integrate their coursework in the POST minor with their major concentration

Supervised field experience for students working in a selected community organization, government agency, social agency, or business.  Outcome:  Students have opportunity to apply the skills and analysis of sociology to a concrete situation.

The internship will allow students to work in a variety of settings using Spanish: business, education, government, or social service agencies.  Outcome: Students will gain practical experience in speaking and writing Spanish.

STAT 391:  Internship in Actuarial Science (1-3)
This course offers an opportunity to obtain experience in actuarial science in a professional environment; placement requires approval of the internship coordinator and acceptance by an employer.  Outcome:  Students will obtain firsthand experience doing actuarial work in a real world environment.  Students must complete 3 credit hours to receive Engaged Learning credit.

THEO 348:  Supervised Ministry (3)
Placement in a ministerial position, on-site supervision, and biweekly individual or group meetings with the course director is required.  Outcome: Students will be able to demonstrate how a sacramental system of aesthetics is often embedded in cultural artifacts.

This course is a seminar course focusing on organizational leadership and change through a 100 hour internship experience with a non-profit organization, government agency, or business organization, pre-approved by the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, & Scholarship.  Outcome: Students will gain professional experience at an organization while reflecting on their work experience and applying theories of organizational leadership, civic engagement, community development, and leadership in the community.

EXPL 393:  Seminar in Integrative Leadership (3)
This is a seminar course for students leaders in approved co-curricular programs (e.g., ABI leaders, student organization executive board, Loyola4Chicago leaders, etc.). Students in this course will complete at least 100 hours in a leadership experience in the context of integrative leadership theory culminating in a portfolio to demonstrate holistic leadership capacity.   
Outcomes: 1. Develop understanding of leadership theories, reflection on actions, and integrative leadership theories. 2. Enhance connection to the institution through leadership experience, and academic and professional learning and development. 3. Produce an integrative professional portfolio.

HONR 290: Literacy Center (3)
This course offers training and practical experience in tutoring adults in written and spoken English at the Loyola Community Literacy Center.  Students tutor adult learners, some of whom are native English speakers preparing for the GED or improving their literacy skills.  Others are immigrants or refugees who may know some English or no English.  Students must attend an orientation as well as bi-weekly class meetings and tutor one or two evenings a week.  Students are required to keep and submit a weekly journal of their experiences, examine a textbook and journal articles concerned with literacy and adult education, write four papers throughout the semester, and prepare a final paper or project.
