Dr. Derrick Witherington is the Assistant Director of Campus Ministry for Sacramental Life. In this role he acts as the administrator of Madonna della Strada Chapel and supervises Campus Ministry programming directly serving the university’s Catholic community including the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), Confirmation, and liturgical ministry. Derrick also serves as the advisor to the AMDG Catholic Students’ Organization. Derrick is also an adjunct faculty member of Loyola’s Theology Department where he teaches classes in Systematic, Historical, and Sacramental Theology. Additionally, he is an associate editor the Maryknoll School of Theology Review, an international journal of pastoral and academic theology.
Derrick is no stranger to Loyola and received both his B.A. and M.A. from our university. During his time as a M.A. student, he worked as the Chapel Intern in Madonna della Strada Chapel, an experience which confirmed his desire to work in ministry in a university setting. After leaving Loyola, Derrick lived abroad in Belgium for several years where he worked as a researcher in Systematic Theology at the Catholic University of Louvain (KU Leuven) while also serving in ministerial-leadership roles in parish and university settings. At the end of his time in Belgium, Derrick earned his doctorate in Systematic Theology and returned to the United States where he worked at Marquette University prior to moving back home to Chicago and Loyola. In his spare time, Derrick enjoys music, the arts, reading, and keeping active.
