Lourdes Service Immersion

Our Lady of Lourdes Hospitality

Lourdes, France became famous in the 1850s after 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The vision instructed her to build a sanctuary and spread the word of the healing powers of the spring waters. Since then, as many as five million people pilgrimage to Lourdes every year to bathe in the spring waters.

This service immersion provides a sophomore, junior or senior nursing student with the opportunity to serve the sick from around the world who come to Lourdes to participate in the religious ritual of bathing in the healing waters of Lourdes. The focus of this service immersion is spiritual care.

Cost to Student: $1500.00

The fee that is paid by the student covers food, lodging and travel. The remainder of the cost of the trip is paid by contributions from the President’s Office of the university.

Payment Schedule

The student payments are due in four installments:

Friday, November 10, 2017       $250.00 is non-refundable  deposit

Friday, December 1, 2017         $250.00 second payment

Friday, February 2, 2018           $500.00 third payment

Friday, March 2, 2018                $500.00 fourth payment

The payments will be submitted to Mary Kilroy on the eighth floor BVM Hall, Lake Shore Campus.

Travel: All participants travel as a group. Airline arrangements are made by the School of Nursing. Typically the group departs Chicago for a flight to Paris, with a short layover in Paris. Following the layover, then there is a short flight from Paris to Pau where a chartered bus will then transport the group the 45 minutes to Lourdes.

Passport: All participants need a passport that is valid at least six months beyond the conclusion of the trip.

Lodging: Hôtel Central, Lourdes, France

Food: Three meals a day are included with Lodging.

Length of time for trip: 11 days.  Projected dates- May 31 - June 10, 2018.

In order to apply for the Lourdes Pilgrimage, nursing students need to submit the 2017 - 2018 Lourdes Pilgrimage Application

Applications are due:
Friday, October 6, 2017 in hard copy format

A twenty minute interview is required of all students.  The anticipated date for interviews will be Friday, October 16 and October 31, 2017.  

The final selection of participants for the Lourdes trip will be made by early November. Those students selected for participation will be notified by email. 

For those students that are accepted for participation on this trip to Lourdes, an initial deposit of $250.00 will be required as confirmation of participation by Friday, November 10, 2017. The payments will be submitted to Mary Kilroy on the eighth floor BVM Hall, Lake Shore Campus.

A typical schedule follows:

Thursday         Departure

Friday              Arrival in Lourdes, get acclimated

Saturday         Morning free, afternoon attend Eucharistic Procession.

Sunday           Attend International Mass in the morning; Afternoon, check into the bathes for service.

Monday through Friday  

                      Mornings:  Participate in formation sessions for Lourdes Hospitallers

                      Afternoons:  Serve pilgrims in the bathes

                      Evenings:  Mass, Reflection, Rosary Procession

Saturday         Bus trip to Loyola Spain

Sunday           Early departure for return flights to Chicago

This experience is a balance between service (baths, trains, processions), formation (Educational Sessions regarding serving in Lourdes) and prayer/spiritual practices (Mass, Adoration, Confession, Rosary, Candlelight Procession, and Eucharistic processions).

There will be four meetings with the whole group who will be going on the service immersion during the spring semester prior to the departure date. The meeting dates and times will be established once all the participants have been selected.
