Loyola Anthropologists Head to Vancouver for 2019 AAA Conference

Ruth Gomberg-Muñoz, Catherine Nichols, and Thea Strand attended the American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting in late November, presenting original research and participating in a variety of events. This year’s AAA conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, and organized jointly with CASCA (the Canadian Anthropological Society/Société Canadienne d’Anthropologie).

Ruth Gomberg-Muñoz presented a paper titled “Changing Climates of Migrant Rights Organizing in Mexico City and Chicago” in an Executive session focused on “The Migrant Caravan and Legacies of Violence: The Changing Climate of Immigration and Asylum at the U.S./Mexican Border and Beyond”. As President of the Society for the Anthropology of North America (SANA), Dr. Gomberg-Muñoz also presided over that section’s board meeting and business meeting, and she chaired a roundtable discussion of four new ethnographies of immigrant policing in the United States.

Catherine Nichols was a presenter in a roundtable session on “The Politics and Stewardship of Collections Data in a Digital Climate.”

Thea Strand presented a paper titled “Deploying and Revaluing Dialect in the Poetic Economy of Rural Norwegian Tourism,” part of an Invited session titled “Poetic Economies and Language Revitalization: New Approaches Inspired by Alexandra (Misty) Jaffe.” Dr. Strand also participated as a presenter in a memorial session for the late Misty Jaffe.
