Zika (ZEE-KA) virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. There is evidence that the Zika virus can also be sexually transmitted. An outbreak of Zika virus is occurring in parts of the world, and will continue to spread. Currently, people living in the greater Chicago area who have not traveled to these areas are generally not considered at risk for infection. Couples who are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant should take precautions when traveling to countries where there is an outbreak. For detailed information about the Zika virus, including prevention, visit the CDC website.
