Data Science

Over the last several decades there has been an explosion of data in nearly every field imaginable including business, marketing, sports, as well as scientific fields such as medicine, genetics, and neuroscience. As a result of this deluge of data, the the demand for individuals with the skills to manage, analyze, and communicate results based on large amounts of data are as high as they have ever been.

Become a data scientist and shape the future of the world!

Data science is a multi-disciplinary field combining techniques from mathematics, computer science, and statistics to organize, analyze, visualize, and extract useful information from data.

At Loyola University Chicago, there are many options for you for your Data Science education.  At the undergraduate level students can choose to major or minor in Data Science, and at the graduate level students can pursue a Master's Degree (M.S.) in Data Science with an option between thesis track and non-thesis track.  In addtion, undergraduate student have the option to pursue a Bachelor's and Master's degree in five total years through the 4+1 program.

Let's Get Started

“The ability to take data — to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it — that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades” Hal Varian, chief economist at Google and UC Berkeley professor of information sciences, business, and economics

Mohammad Abuhamad

Dr. Mohammed Abuhamad is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Loyola University Chicago. He received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 2020. He also received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from INHA University, (Incheon, Republic of Korea) in 2020. His research interests include AI/Deep-Learning-based Information Security, especially Software and Mobile/IoT Security. He is also interested in Machine Learning-based Applications and Adversarial Machine Learning.

Dr. Mena Whalen
Statistics

Mena Whalen

Dr. Mena Whalen is a statistician and a data scientist who joined Loyola as an Assistant Professor in 2021 after completing her Ph.D. in statistics at Northwestern University. Her areas of research include change point analysis, spatial analysis, data visualization, survey sampling, and network models. She is an ambassador and co-organizer of the Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference for Chicago, and as a first-generation college student, Dr. Whalen prioritizes supporting students from all backgrounds and establishing entry points to data science as demonstrated through her work teaching at Cook County Correctional facilities through Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP) and volunteering with Hacking 4 Justice.

Dmitriy Dligach

Dr. Dligach works at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and medicine. All of Dligach's current projects have a critical component – representation learning – that is key to their success. Representation learning involves techniques that allow a system to automatically discover representations needed for feature detection or classification from raw data. Prior to joining Loyola, Dligach was a researcher at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Colorado Boulder, his MS in computer science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and his BS in computer science from Loyola University Chicago.
