Rebecca Witheridge: Grad student excels in (and out of) classroom

Cross-age peer mentoring program funded by U.S. Department of Justice

Dr. Katherine Tyson of the School of Social Work and Dr. Maryse Richards of the Department of Psychology recently received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for their proposal to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based cross-age mentoring to reduce negative outcomes related to violence exposure and to promote positive development.

Dean Wheeler makes list of most influential social workers

In 2014, Dean Darrell Wheeler, PhD, of the School of Social Work was named one of the 30 most influential social workers alive today by the Social Work Degree Guide, citing his work on identification and exploration of individual and communal resiliency in HIV prevention and intervention, with particular emphasis on African American and Black gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.  

Grant to help train grad students who will work with at-risk youth

Loyola’s School of Social Work received a $480,000 federal grant in September to train graduate students and help them work with at-risk youth who have behavioral health disorders. Over the next three years, the school hopes to recruit about 100 students for the project.  

Study Abroad Summer 2015

In Summer 2015, Loyola students are invited to join the School of Social Work in Milan, Loyola’s Rome Center, Beijing, or Mexico. Complete a 3-credit undergrad or graduate course in one of our unique immersion experiences. Learn more by attending an upcoming Study Abroad Information Session.  

Loyola University Chicago proudly sponsors the RACE Project

Loyola is a proud sponsor of the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibition that is being brought to the Chicagoland area by the YWCA Evanston/North Shore and the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, IL. Dr. Jeanne Sokolec, Director of the BSW Program in the School of Social Work, joined University colleagues on a committee this summer to plan on-campus lectures and discussions to complement the exhibit. We hope that University students, faculty, and staff will take advantage of the opportunity to experience the exhibition and to participate in the related on-campus programs this Fall. 2014 Summer Institute on Aging

Our Annual Summer Institute on Aging took place on August 4th-8th at the Water Tower Campus, led by Dr. Marcia Spira and featuring presenters from various aspects of the field. This year's institute focused on “Therapeutic Interventions for Older Individuals, Couples, Families, and Groups.”

MSW Students Receive Schweitzer Fellowships

Two of our current MSW students, Kathryn Huber and Padraic Stanley, were selected for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Program. They both have plans to work on healthcare-related projects this upcoming year: Kathryn with Cabrini Green Legal Aid and Padraic with Rincon Family Services. The School of Social Work and Institute of Pastoral Studies at Lookingglass

Loyola's School of Social Work and the Institute of Pastoral Studies hosted a reception, special performance, and panel discussion of "In the Garden: A Darwinian Love Story" at the Lookingglass Theater on Sunday, May 18th. The performance was followed by a panel discussion on the factors that sustain our relationships; MSW faculty, Dr. Terry Northcut, and MSW alum, Moshe Brownstein, participated in the panel. New Social Work Certificate Program Introduced

The School of Social Work is proud to announce the Advanced School Mental Health Practice Program (ASMHPP), a dynamic and nearly all on-line 15-credit hour certificate program open to school based mental health practitioners in the Chicago area and around the country.   LEARN MORE

School reunion helps celebrate 100th student presentation

Associate professor Shirley Simon has been helping students make presentations at global conferences since 2005. This year marks the 100th student presentation, and the School of Social Work invited all of the presenters back for a reunion to celebrate the milestone.

Spring 2013 Teach In focuses on work with military clients

In March 2013, Loyola’s Social Work community came together to discuss Social Work with the Military Client Population. Issues covered by professors included Domestic Violence in the military family (Prof. Priscila Friere); Children of deployed military and veterans, in the school setting (Prof. Michael Kelly); Substance abuse (Prof. Lynn Boyle); Couples, rebuilding relationships (Prof. Janice Rasheed); Military sexual trauma (Prof. Terry Northcut); Suicide assessment and treatment (Prof. Caleb Kim); and PTSD.

Resource Advocate for LGBTQ community

Megan Salisbury, an Advanced Standing MSW student and intern at the Center on Halsted was featured in their on-line newsletter regarding her work as a Resource Advocate.

LGBT Psychology and Related Fields

Dr. Michael P. Dentato and Dr. Jeanne Sokolec, faculty members from the School of Social Work will present papers and workshops at the first international conference surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues this June at Instituto Universitário de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal.
