About

Hongying Chen is a licensed clinical psychologist who joined the Wellness Center in December 2012. She was born and raised in China. She earned a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology at Ball State University, a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Northern Illinois University, and a master’s degree in Psychoanalytic Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK. Respect and understanding for individual differences are core values for her, whether she is working with individuals, or in a group therapy context. She recognizes the influence of early experiences on later development and the interconnectedness of the individual’s actions with the environment including family, social and cultural contexts. Her approach is also influenced by Eastern philosophies which emphasize self awareness and the mind-body connection. Her clinical interests include family of origin, relationship issues, trauma, grief, anger management, eating disorder, diversity, racial and cultural identity, LGBTQ, international student well-being, cross-cultural psychology, and training and supervision. In her free time, she enjoys performing arts, films, music, reading, good foods, travel, nature, and time spent with friends and family.
