Father Richard F. Costigan, S.J., 1931 - 2013

Father Richard F. Costigan, S.J. died Thursday afternoon, August 29, 2013, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 82 years old and a
Jesuit for 62 years. Born in Ottawa, Kansas, on March 22, 1931, Father Costigan entered the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Missouri, on August 8, 1951. He completed a Licentiate in Philosophy at Saint Louis University in 1958. After teaching History at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colorado, he studied Theology at St. Mary’s College in Kansas, from 1961 to 1965. He was ordained to the priesthood in St. Mary’s on June 16, 1964. Father Costigan joined the Theology faculty in 1976 and served here for 34 years. The focus of his study was the history of ecclesiology. His wrote "Rohrbacher and the Ecclesiology of Ultramontanism" (Rome: Georgian University Press, 1980) as well as several articles published in Theological Studies.
