Chinese: The Voice of the Future
ChinaVoice is a eight-week, six-credit, intensive summer Chinese language program. The ChinaVoice program offers you a unique and integrated way of learning Chinese. Our combination of rigorous language classes and independent experiential learning gives students a well-rounded Chinese education. Regardless of —where you are in your study of Mandarin, from the very beginning to the depths of Classical Chinese, ChinaVoice will provide you with an intensive language course that is equivalent to one year at your home university.
ChinaVoice offers courses in all language levels, from those just beginning to those learning to research in classical Chinese. This program is designed to immerse you in Chinese and develop your language skills profoundly.
- Courses are designed for balanced and rapid improvement in language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- One-on-one tutorial sessions are held at least five days a week.
- You will take a language pledge in order to be exposed to a full-Chinese language environment.
- Study activities and excursions are designed to practice what you have learned in the classroom.
- Living options may include having a Chinese roommate and living with a Chinese family.
The eight week’s study is equivalent to one semester of intensive Chinese language study at The Beijing Center or one year at a U.S. university. Apart from 4 hours of classroom study and one hour of tutorial session five days a week, you will need to study for 3 to 5 hours every day in order to maintain class expectations. Prepare to gain a firm understanding on this critial language at whatever your level may be!
During the ChinaVoice program, you will have the opportunity to travel around Beijing and put your language skills to use while also learning about your new temporary home. In addition to day trips around Beijing, students are expected to take their own independent excursion during the sixth week of the program. Staff at The Beijing Center will help create an excursion that best suites you. Independent Excursions will challenge your ability to find your way in a foreign city and give you an opportunity to interact with local people all over China.
A list of options includes 15 cities all over China: Harbin (1), Shenyang (2), Chengde (3), Datong (4), Tiayuan (5), Xi'an (6), Luoyang (7), Kaifeng (8), Tai'an (9), Ji'nan (10), Qingdao (11), Nanjing (12), Suzhuo (13), Shanghai (14), Hangzhou (15), Anyang (16), and Qufu (17). Specific criteria will be required during your weekend excursion, such as train rides, site visits, scavenger hunts and interaction with locals. An oral presentation and/or a written report, depending on your Chinese level, may be required for a final project.
