ChinaGreen is a three-credit, four-week summer environmental-studies travel course

Program dates: June 2 - July 1, 2014

Students will acquire an understanding of how sustainable systems work and how the structure and function of these systems is altered by human activities. Through first-hand experience, students will study the major environmental issues in China: air pollution, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.

Academics

The objective of this course is to have students understand China’s environmental problems from different Chinese points of view. The experience will also provide students with an understanding of how sustainable systems work and how the structure and function of these systems is altered by human activities.

These goals will be accomplished by providing students with first-hand experience to study environmental issues in China: air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.

During the first half of the course, students will have class (3 hour sessions) every morning in Beijing. In the afternoon they will have free time or scheduled trips. Trips in the past have included the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall, Beijing Hutongs (old neighborhoods) and the Olympic Green. The trips will enable students to develop a sophisticated understanding of Chinese beliefs, behaviors, and policies. Students will be able to utilize this information and connect it to Beijing’s current plans for environmental development.

Excursions

‌‌‌The second half of the course is spent in several different cities. Students will have the opportunity to make their own observations and partake in active research. Students will have lectures from local guest speakers, organizations and the professor and engage in conversations with locals, school children and community leaders.
