Strategy 1

Deliver an undergraduate learning experience that embodies concretely the spirit and principles of the document “Transformative Education in the Jesuit Tradition,” promoting development of the whole person through an integrated curricular and co-curricular program.

TACTIC 1

Implement an enrollment management plan that recruits a freshman class that is socially diverse, including first-generation college students, students in search of Loyola’s transformative educational experience, and students with the academic credentials necessary to participate fully in our rigorous academic experience.

Actions and Directions

  • Increase the pool of highly qualified, first-choice students, moving our present average ACT/SAT by three points by 2015.
  • University Marketing and Communication will assist Enrollment Management in promoting our programs for talented students.
  • Monitor our academic assistance initiatives (LEAP, STEP, etc.) to retain students needing support, especially first-generation students.

TACTIC 2

Ensure that the core is coherent, authentically humanistic, and developmental in nature and delivery.

Actions and Directions

  • Continue to refine the core curriculum to ensure that it is developmental in nature (sequencing and timing), that both its content and learning outcomes reflect the institution’s philosophy of education that is explained in “ Transformational Education,” and that it provides opportunities for synthesis.
  • Modify the core in such a way as to create core academic experiences that are common to all undergraduates and that promote the values of inquiry, reflection, and service.
  • Refine the core review, evaluation, and redesign processes to ensure the incorporation of Ignatian pedagogy as an evaluative criterion.
  • Ensure that experiential learning, learning communities, and service and internship opportunities are an integral part of every undergraduate program, reaching 80 percent of undergraduates by 2015.
  • Ensure that capstone and other opportunities are a part of each undergraduate major by 2015.

TACTIC 3

Deliver three-quarters of the core curriculum instruction with full-time faculty.

Actions and Directions

  • Establish a multiyear staffing plan that increases the percentage of core courses taught by full-time faculty to three-quarters over the next five years. (Estimated cost: $2,000,000 to annual budget)
  • Implement the plan through the departmental assignment process and budget review process for faculty resource and position allocation.

TACTIC 4

Set new standards for meeting the advising, academic, and co-curricular needs of our students in order to provide a Loyola experience that is coherent, broadly developmental, and transformative.

Actions and Directions

  • Coordinate our student academic support and co-curricular departments and programs to provide coherent and coordinated programs for first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year students that integrate academic, co-curricular programs in residence life, campus ministry, internships and placement, and leadership development. (Estimated cost: $200,000 to annual budget)
  • Reorder our advising system to increase faculty involvement in academic advising and to focus additional resources on at-risk students.

TACTIC 5

Create additional programs for talented students to expand their opportunities for more advanced academic work.

Actions and Directions

  • Enhance the work of the Fellowships and Scholarships Office in order to double the number of our graduates receiving prestigious post-baccalaureate fellowships by 2015.
  • Enhance co-curricular opportunities for honors students. (Estimated cost: $3,000,000 to endowment)
  • Develop advanced undergraduate seminars that transition undergraduates to graduate-level instruction in their major.
  • Expand five-year bachelors/masters program opportunities.
  • Enhance the role and scope of programs in the fine and performing arts, enabling more students to take advantage of opportunities in the arts. (Estimated cost: $1,000,000 to endowment)
