Yearly Recognition & Excellence Awards
Each year the Staff Recognition and Excellence Awards honor professional contributions and quality service of our University staff with special public acknowledgement for their contributions and exemplary work.
Staff Council offers offers six distinguished awards: Staff Member of the Year, Kay Egan (Person for Others), Megs Langdon (Person for Community), Student Service (Person for Students), Team Spirit, and Rising Star (New Employee).
The Staff Recognition and Excellence Award initiative was a collective effort by University Staff Council and volunteer members who represent a diverse cross-section of departments and seasoned staff members from each campus.

Staff Council's Staff Recognition and Excellence Awards recognize the extraordinary professional contributions and quality service of our University staff (non-exempt and exempt) and their integral role in advancing Loyola University Chicago's mission and fulfilling Loyola's promise in preparing people to lead extraordinary lives.
All regular staff members, full-time and part-time (20+ hours per week) are eligible, provided that they are on non-probationary status and in good standing with his/her respective department and University at the time of nomination. Previous award recipients are ineligible. Awards will be selected by elected Staff Council members. To avoid possible conflicts of interest, elected Staff Council members are not eligible to nominate or be nominated during their terms in office.
Criteria & Award Categories
Nominees must have consistently performed in an exemplary manner, exceeding the expectations of their position, and should demonstrate commitment to the mission of the University and reflect Loyola's values, as well as the following attributes: Integrity, Trust, and Ethics; Ambassadorship; Mutual Respect and Collaboration; Superior Customer Service (internal/external); Professionalism, Pride in Work and Accountability.
Staff Member of the Year Award
To honor and recognize a staff member with three years or more University Service who has made a significant positive impact within their Department and across the University throughout the previous year. Fostering the mission of the University; demonstrated ambassadorship, exceptional leadership, and superior service to the Loyola community (faculty, staff, students & alumni). Over the past year, the individual has demonstrated his/her willingness to fulfill job-related responsibilities in light of the Jesuit ideals and has made a conscious effort at improving his/her area, and the University at large.
Kay Egan (Person for Others) Award
To distinguish a staff member with five years or more University Service who has consistently made a significant positive impact within their department, fostering the mission of the University; an exemplary colleague and universally recognized resource and co-worker who provides the highest quality of service to the Loyola community (faculty, staff, students & alumni).
Megs Langdon (Person for Community) Award
To distinguish a staff member with three years or more University service who has consistently made a significant positive impact beyond the Loyola, and within the person's larger community. The award recognizes an exemplary colleague who is universally recognized for his or her community service, including but not limited to; leadership, commitment to social justice, and ability organize community members.
Student Service (Person for Students) Award
To recognize a staff member with three years or more University service who has made an ongoing commitment in providing expert service to our students; demonstrated initiative and creativity, exceptional individual or team contributions, and continuous improvement in student service.
Team Spirit Award
To recognize a department / group / team (2 or more individuals) which has made a significant contribution to a productive and harmonious work environment internally and interdepartmentally and demonstrated commitment to excellent customer assistance and continuous improvement in customer relations.
Rising Star (New Employee) Award
To acknowledge a staff with one to three years University service who has made a unique departmental contribution by embracing the Loyola spirit and has demonstrated examples of high-quality of service, track record of building interdepartmental relationships that lead to continuous improvement.
The Loyola community (staff, students, faculty, administrators) is invited to participate in nominations. All nominations should include specific and current examples of the staff member's achievements and contributions that reflect the principle criteria and attributes mentioned above. Nominations will be accepted online and on official paper nomination form (can be downloaded).
To avoid possible conflicts of interest, elected Staff Council members are not eligible to nominate or be nominated during their terms in office.
All nominations and corresponding forms will be kept confidential before, during and after the selection process. Nomination forms will be multi-point system based on criteria and attributes. Inquiries and concerns will be forwarded to Chair of Staff Recognition & Excellence Awards Committee.
- The Chair of Staff Recognition and Excellence Award Committee will coordinate nominations submitted with elected Staff Council members for review and selection
- The Chair of Staff Council will coordinate with Human Resources to verify nominee eligibility once elected Staff Council members have reviewed nominations for final selection; in retaining paperwork of selected awardees in their permanent personnel file.
Individual recipients of the Staff Member of the Year ($1,000), Kay Egan ($500), Megs Langdon ($500), Student Services ($500), and Rising Star ($250) Awards will receive monetary awards.
Recipients of the Staff Member of the Year, Kay Egan, and Student Services Awards will also received one (1) day paid time-off.
Team Spirit Award recipients will receive a team photo; Choice of complimentary ice cream social, continental breakfast, or pizza lunch for the department / group / team of (up to 25).
Individual recipient of the Rising Star Award will receive a gift certificate for dinner for two.
All Recipients will receive:
- A certificate in recognition of their service
- A letter of recognition from the President
- A feature article in Inside Loyola
- Recognition on the Staff Council web site
Winners must be present to receive their award prizes.
Presentation and Award Ceremony
