Department Scholarships and Graduate Assistantships

The following awards are made in the fall of each year.

Scholarships
In 2004/2005 the School of Social Work awarded approximately 50 scholarships from a total of $150,000.00 available from the scholarship endowment of the School of Social Work. The average award was $2,500.00 for the academic year.

Graduate Assistantships
The School of Social Work awards graduate assistantships to approximately 18 to 20 students each year in the School of Social Work. These awards offer partial tuition reimbursement or a monthly stipend. This is a work-related award, and to be eligible for a graduate assistantship, a student is required to be full time in the School of Social Work and able to contribute 7-10 hours each week to work in the school. The approximate amount of this award is $5,000.00 for the academic year.

Decisions about academic scholarships and graduate assistant positions through the School of Social Work are rendered upon admission into the program.  No additional documents need to be submitted for applicants to be considered for these awards, as the application materials to the program also serve this purpose.  Students not offered funding upon admission are encouraged to explore other options for assistance.

Stipend Field Placements
A small number of field placements provide monthly stipends to students. Generally, these are in the second year of the M.S.W. program. Additional information can be obtained from the Director of Field Work at the School of Social Work.

Alternative Private Student Loans
The terms and conditions of private educational loans are similar to the Federal Stafford Loan. Often, students who are eligible for Federal Student Loans or students who want to supplement their federal Loans will apply. A preferred alternative loan lender list is available at www.luc.edu/finaid.

Work-Study Programs
Students in the School of Social Work may be eligible for work-study positions on Loyola Campuses as funds are available. Please consult www.luc.edu/finaid/graduate.shtml for student employment opportunities within the university. Determination is done by the student financial aid office, and a completed FAFSA form is required.
