Loyola Debaters Have a Strong Outing at Vanderbilt

Debate Team Co-Captain Daewon Hwang and his partner Jack Young finished the prelimianary debating rounds as the 2nd seed out of 72 teams from 21 Universities from across the United States at a major competition this past weekend. The event was hosted February 3rd and 4th at Vanderbilt University. The duo competed against teams from Bard College, Clemson University, Duke University, Morehouse College, Notre Dame, Regis University, Seattle University, Vermont, Wheaton College, The University of Miami, and The United States Air Force Academy.

Daewon and Jack also claimed individual speaking honors. Daewon was the 5th placed speaker out of the 144 competitors with Jack earning the 6th place award. Senior Daewon was impressed with Jack’s success at such a prestigious tournament “As a first year debater it is incredible that Jack has done so well this early in his career”.

First year debaters Astrid Palardy and Isabel Gliniecki also had a strong showing at the event. Astrid and Isabel were the top seed in the novice division after the preliminary debates. Astrid noted they had a great experience and appreciated competing against some incredible debaters from other universities.

The team will next turn its’ attention to volunteering as judges for Chicago Debates upcoming event at Lincoln Park High School the weekend of February 15th and 16th.
