Beta Alpha Psi

Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) is a national accounting, finance and information systems honor society whose broad objective is to promote and recognize scholastic achievement and professional excellence between accounting, finance and information systems students and alumni. The Loyola University Chicago Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi was chartered in 1960 and continues to grow in strength and diversity. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Brian Stanko, provides us with guidance and nurturing.

We have earned the respect of accounting firms, industry and faculty because we maintain high standards and expectations of our members. Our success is dependent on the strong, active participation of our members.

What we do:

In seeking to promote and recognize scholastic achievement and professional excellence between accounting, finance and information systems students and alumni, our detailed objectives include:

  • To encourage interest in the accounting, finance and information systems profession
  • To provide opportunities for members to interact with accounting and business professionals, faculty and other students
  • To provide informative programs, encouraging the development of professional growth
  • To provide assistance to campus and community organizations, as well as to encourage cooperation and association with other student organizations and BAP Chapters
  • To increase interaction with Chicago area accounting firms and industry through promotion of accounting, finance and information systems excellence, as well as participation in placement service activities and industry tours

Community Service

Beta Alpha Psi assists different groups in our community. Each semester students assist the Francis Soup Kitchen. From January through April, students assist individuals in filling out their tax returns through the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Campus & Student Services

Beta Alpha Psi members provide free tutoring on a walk-in basis two days a week during the Fall and Spring Semesters (one day a week on the Lake Shore Campus). Tutoring is held in the Beta Alpha Psi office on the 4th floor of Maguire Hall, 1 E. Pearson, on the Water Tower Campus and in the Tutoring Center in Damen Hall on the Lake Shore Campus. Each year, BAP sponsors a "Meet the Firms Night," where accounting, finance and information systems students have the opportunity to speak one-on-one to representatives of firms and companies who are presently hiring Loyola students.

BAP also has the opportunity to interact with other Beta Alpha Psi chapters during the annual regional meetings and national meetings. Regional meetings are typically held in Chicago or another Midwest location, while the national meeting is held in various locations throughout the country. These meetings are designed to give members an opportunity to become abreast of issues presently impacting the accounting, finance and information systems profession and to give members an open forum to discuss issues impacting their chapters. During these meetings, active members also have presented their award-winning technical manuscripts. Many students over the years have been recognized as literary scholars for submitting manuscripts to the Undergraduate Manuscript Contest and national seminar scholars for submitting manuscripts to the Thomas J. Burns National Student Seminar.

Professional & Technical Programs

Beta Alpha Psi sponsors technical programs each semester. These programs are designed to enhance the students knowledge base, supplement class material, aid students in selecting careers and provide an opportunity for students to interact with accounting, finance, information systems and industry professionals. We often have lunch after our professional meetings, which gives members an opportunity to meet with the professional speaker in a social atmosphere.

Social Interaction

Beta Alpha Psi organizes various social events to help develop interpersonal communication skills that are necessary during the recruiting season. Professional relationships developed through social contact at Beta Alpha Psi events are valuable assets to have for both the present and the future.

Officer Elections

Officer elections occur in the latter part of the second semester of the year. Elections are held for the following offices: President, Vice President, Treasurer, National Office Correspondent, Recording Secretary and Internal Auditor. Elected officers will begin their term following the end of the second semester. Newly elected officers will also be given the opportunity to attend the National Meeting following their election.
