Discovering the ruins and treasures of Herculaneum

SSII Herculaneum Day Trip!

The students follow an experienced guide around the ancient ruins left by Vesuvius' eruption

Students and their guide

On Friday, July 4th, JFRC students of Summer Session II set out on a day trip down to the historical site of Herculaneum, an ancient city completely covered up by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The group toured through the city's near-perfectly preserved ruins, learning about Herculaneum's history as a Greek, Samnite, and lastly Roman town. The students then traveled up the volcano for lunch at a restaurant featuring a beautiful view of the Bay of Naples. After the meal, the bus brought some students back to Rome and the JFRC, while other students stayed in the area for the weekend to travel to destinations such as Sorrento and Capri.
