Summer 2010 program

    May 22-June 25, 2010

    This five-week program is scheduled to permit students to return to Chicago in time to participate in Loyola's second Summer Session. Most classes will meet for one-and-a-half-hour sessions Monday through Thursday, and will be taught by Rome- and Chicago-based Loyola faculty. On-site classes will meet twice a week for slightly over three hours. The final exam is typically scheduled for the last class meeting of each course.

    Please be aware that, when you are making your flight reservations, all participants in this program are expected to arrive at the JFRC on Saturday morning, May 22, and are required to depart by 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 25. Students will reside in double rooms on campus while enrolled in the program. Administrative and student life support will be provided by JFRC staff.

    Program Fee

    Program Fee: $6,900 (estimated; subject to change)

    The Rome program fee covers tuition [entitling enrollment in six semester hours (two courses)], room and partial board (breakfast and lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday), activities' fee, select additional course fees, and three day trips: the initial orientation trip (tentatively to Frascati), a trip to Pompei, and a trip to Assisi. 

    Roundtrip airfare [USA-Rome-USA] and international health insurance are not included in the program fee and are the personal responsibility of the student. Optional trips to Siena and to Florence are also not included but will be available at a student's own expense. 

       

    Application Procedure

    Applications for the five-week summer 2010 session may be submitted until Monday, March 22, 2010, provided space is still available by that date. Should the program fill sooner, applications received after it fills will be placed on a waitlist. All applications must be in our Chicago office no later than Monday, March 22nd; any received after this date will not be considered even on the waitlist.

    The following items constitute a completed application for summer study at the JFRC:

    • A completed, signed and dated summer application form*
    • Submission of an application fee of $500 with the application form, of which $100 is a study abroad processing fee and $400 applies toward housing charges
    • A completed academic advisor recommendation form (sent to our office by the advisor)
    • A completed judicial recommendation form (sent to our office by the student affairs officer)
    • Submission of an official transcript with the application form (Loyola-Chicago students need not submit a transcript as we can access Loyola records online)
    • Submission of a photocopy of the data page of the student's valid passport.

    *Students not currently enrolled at Loyola University Chicago must also file an online summer application form for admission to Loyola University Chicago. It is not possible to register for classes unless a visiting student has filed this form.

    REGISTRATION

    Registration for Summer 2010 will open on Monday, February 15, 2010.  To  register, you will need your Loyola ID (UVID) and a password. If you are not a Loyola Chicago student, you will not have a Loyola ID and password until you have submitted the online form mentioned above.

       

    VISA PROCEDURE

    A study visa is required of all non EU-citizens participating in the program.  A workshop explaining the steps needed to apply for this Schengen Visa will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.  Visa applications may be submitted through the Chicago office of the Rome Center only during the week of March 1 - 5, 2010  and only from students within the jurisdiction of the Italian consulate in Chicago.

       Pre-Departure Orientation

    A mandatory pre-departure orientation session will be held for students going on Loyola-sponsored summer study abroad programs on Sunday, April 18, 2010. 

    Once accepted, the balance of the housing/activities' fees ($2,770) must be paid no later than Thursday, April 1, 2010; tuition ($3,630) will be e-billed and due no later than May 5, 2010. If you fail to pay the amount due on April 1st, you will be withdrawn from any Rome sections in which you may have registered.

    Post-Acceptance Checklist
    Submit photocopy of study visa inside passport. 
    Submit photocopy of insurance provider card (plus a letter of policy that states international coverage).
    Submit emergency contact information.

       

    Textbooks

    The Loyola Bookstore, operated by Follett's, is located at the Lake Shore Campus, 6435 N. Sheridan Road, Chicago. Telephone: 773.508.7350. Students must purchase their textbooks in the U.S. and bring them to Rome.
