ESSENTIALS OF LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT SIMULATION
Thursday morning
Session Objective
This session will use an interactive simulation to introduce participants to the supply chain management concept and to the effects decisions have on inventory levels, fill rate and costs.
Session Overview
Participants will engage in an active simulation featuring several key components of a real world supply chain. In their roles as supply chain decision makers, participants will move goods through the supply chain, decide how much of each part to order and manufacture, and evaluate the total cost of operating the supply chain. This simulation will provide a better understanding of how the various parts of a supply chain are connected and where to find opportunities for increased integration among supply chain partners.
Session Outline
- Introduction and set-up of simulation
- Run simulation
- Debriefing and discussion of simulation results
Session Outcomes
After this session, participants will know:
- How goods flow through the supply chain
- The importance of communication in the supply chain
- Where hurdles to supply chain integration are found
- The importance of forecasting demand
- The benefits of centralizing information
- The basics of an effective supply chain relationship
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Shorten response time through communication
- Overcome basic hurdles to supply chain integration
- Begin defining quality in the supply chain
- Decrease variance in the supply chain
INTRODUCTION TO LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Thursday afternoon
Session Objective
This session will provide a general overview of the roles that logistics and supply chain management play in the workplace and society. The collaborative relationships that are fundamental in a supply chain are also discussed.
Session Overview
We will discuss the process involved with delivering the majority of goods we consume from across the globe. The various costs associated with logistics are presented along with other fundamental dimensions used to measure logistics. We present how logistics decisions result in conflicting objectives within an organization or a supply chain. We focus on how the design of a product can be influenced by the logistics associated with getting that product to the end user. Finally, the structure of the supply chain and the basics behind relationships within the supply chain are discussed in detail.
Session Outline
- Key logistics functions
- Overview of logistics costs and other dimensions
- Logistics decision making within an organization
- Logistics product design
- Role of collaborative relationships within the supply chain
